The manual I have for this engine which is in a bobcat, says to use nondetergent oil for brake in but the olny thing the parts store has is the cheap stuff. I'd prefer to get some of the better brand. Doesn't it really make any differance. All they have is the store brand oil in it, Oriellys brand by the way. I plan to run valvoline 10W-40 in it and would prefer to brake it in with the same brand. I'm I crazy. Would it be ok to use the cheap stuff to start with.

they still make non detergent oil 30w. i think i buy harvest brand from my local fleet type store called l and m. i think its worth doing, as i've rebuilt half a dozen of those kohlers, and so far no problems...if you like i can look up the exact name brand...seems to me you can get it at napa also.....

I think the O'reilly oil is made/packaged(who knows) by Citgo. We use it in out shop, it seems to be good oil and have no oil related engine failures. Depending on what Kohler you are running, you might want to run 30W in the summer and 10w30 in the winter. I have seen a lot of oil realted engine failures in Kohlers from using multi-vis oil in the old Kohler cast iron engines.

Old, non-detergent oil by its nature is cheap because its paraffin based. There is nothing wrong with O'Reilly's brand. Any other brand setting next to it regardless of the price would have probably have came from the same plant since so few manufacture it any longer.
If you don't find something to take more of your hard earned cash try the JD break in stuff. That'll do it. Good luck..

John Deere did and likely still does sell oil formulated for engine break in. Some tractors were required to use it for the first several oil changes.
