I have the type of air cleaner where the mesh can't be removed and the entire air cleaner must be soaked in solvent to get it clean. Any recommendations on what the best solvent is to use to clean that mesh?

Dan,

You don't say if you have a gas or diesel tractor. If it's diesel, it's not a good idea to clean the air cleaner mesh with gasoline; you could end up with a runaway engine if you start it up and there's still gas in the air cleaner.

You shouldn't need to clean the mesh, unless it's really filthy. An oil bath air cleaner is supposed to clean itself. Your problems may be caused by too thick of oil in the cleaner.

Most people I know use gas and most books say to clean air cleaners in gas.

I've been using gas. How long would you soak that air cleaner in gas?

I'd probably give it 24 hours or so, then blow it out with compressed air if you can.

Thanks so much for that information. I've been soaking it only for a couple of hours, obviously not long enough. Once you blow it out, would you recommend pouring motor oil into and through the mesh before reinstalling it on the tractor?

Dan, what exactly are you doing?
Normal air cleaner maintenance is simply to clean out the bowl and refill with engine oil, so normal use will keep the mesh as clean as that oil. Hence regular maintenance!
Heavier particles will collect as a sludge but some will just stay in the oil. If you are trying to clean out a cleaner which has been run with no oil, you may be in trouble as soil doesn"t dissolve too well in gas. As you are cleaning it with solvent then yes, oil it before use, or any loose dry dust will be injested by the engine.
Regards, RAB

I was changing the oil in the pan w/reasonable regularity when the engine just choked down and stopped on me. It would run w/the air filter hose off the carb but would die when I put the hose back on. I figured the mesh was clogged up badly.

Changing the oil in the air cleaner cup needs to be a part of your engine oil change. You shouldn't have any clogged filter problems from now on if you do that. Use whatever type of oil you are putting in your crankcase.
