Looking at a 240 Utility to (maybe) purchase need to know the differance ....The International 240 Utility and the Farmall 240 I assume are one and the same?
Question #2 I belive it's a 1959 model
SN# 2556J; is this a 6 volt or 12 volt system? No battery in it. Is ther some way to tell from the gen,mag etc. No tag on gen. Thanks

We had a 240 utility when I was growing up. I don't believe they offered a live PTO even as an option. They are very light and that limits their pulling ability, but I'd take one over a Ford N series any day. We used ours primarily to run 7' sycle bar mowers and to pull a rake.

also, you could look on the starter see if it says 12v or the solenoid (mines under the dash)

one way you might be able to tell if its been converted to 12v system is look at the coil and see if it say 12v. also, the headlight or other bulbs might say if they are 12v/6v.. i've got a 240 utility that was given to me. i put alot of work into it, and i must say its been a pretty good tractor....i believe there's an international and a farmall version with slight differences. don't know for sure...if you go to farmall site, there's alot of knowledgeable folks that can help you out better. mine is like a 1961/62 model. i can't remember if mine was 6v. i know that i converted to an alternator. i've got several manuals for this tractor, but can't get to them right know...(kid's room closet and they are still sleepin)

i just bought one 2 weeks ago, mine is 6 volt + ground.it must be a good one as it belonged to the state of nebraska and has a belly mount sickle mower on it and they couldnt wear it out mowing road ditches.

IH240 is the utility version, Farmall 240 is the row crop version. 6 volt. great tractor. i have had mine for a year and a half and use it almost every day.
