Have an '89 F150 4x4 with a cracked head or blown gasket, don't know which...question is: should I junk it or is it worth the trouble of repairing? The body is rusted bad, engine is showing 199,000 miles and odometer is broke (don't know the true mileage...) Not being the most mechanically inclined individual, would need to take it to the shop for repairs. Any thoughts on repair costs? I could replace it for $1500...

It has the straight 6, 300.

I could sure use the front bumper for my 89' F-150. Bashed the center of mine in budging a forklift and 6 pallets into the back of a reefer trailer. Don't ask! The petfoods industry it tougher than you think. My truck is no show queen.

Junk it fast.
That's coming from somebody who spent more money and time to repair a 1995 than what purchasing a new 1999 would have cost.

I just cannot see how you could spent 12 or 13 grand on fixing an old truck! I think I would have stopped WAYYYYY Y before it got to that point.

The engine assembly work was done at the non-union shop where my Father-inlaw works. The local economy is slow and a couple of guys have already been laid off. What would happen if I went in there screaming about the three total rebuilts where done wrong? he would have been canned or at leats laid off. Then there was the apprentice mechanic that turned the engine way past the red line. And that was after he dropped the engine and busted the windshield etc. They used the wrong oil pump bolt and siezed the crank. They used the wrong balancer shaft bearing and ruined the balancer shaft. They bolted on the cam gear without the bushing and had the timing advanced at least 20 degrees. They re-used the old rocker arm lock nuts and that was after grinding them for clearance. They re-used those ruined lock nuts again even after I supplied shorter push rods!!!

work for ford and dodge but i am a die hard chevy fan..... anyways that old 300 is one heck of a motor. i have a 1990 f150 4x4 that i bought i high school ('95) with 40k on it. it now has over 200k, been through he!! and back. only problem was when the water pump went out at about 150k and the wife let it get alittle warm so the head needed some work. fix it yourself. get a manual and have a blast. no better time to learn (or an easier auto engine to work on beside the classic 350!)

If you can't fix it or swap the engine out yourself at todays labor prices you better sell it for parts and go truck shopping.
