Grease seals on camper trailer wheels

Wheel bearings on a small tent camper trailer. Bearings are fine, grease seals are OK, except that the little springs in the grooves are deteriorated. Don't see any way of removing seals, or dismantling bearing. The bearing is mounted on a sleeve which slides on the axle - and looks like it must be replaced as a unit. All I need are those little springs! Look like they're made of Piano wire, and obviously were there to cause lip of seal to hug the center sleeve of bearing. Right now my only option seems to be frequent greasing! Any suggestions?

If it feels smooth when you spin it, just grease it and don't worry about it!

Buy new seals that are about the same inside dia.
remove the little springs, and put them in your old seals. I don't think that will solve your leak problem tho.

There are several forums on the internet specifically for camper trailers and RV vehicles. Maybe they have a camper bearing expert that can help.

What kind of camper is it? Sounds like something was cobbled together at one time or another maybe?

Camper had the name "Camel" on the title, when we got it - has been in our possession for about 30 years, and it wasn"t new when we got it. It looks to me as if bearing and hub are a sealed unit and must be replaced as a unit. Like I indicated in another post, they don"t seem to want to come apart like a conventional wheel bearing. Sleeve that comes off axle is not tapered or does it have shoulders, and entire bearing assembly and hub come off together with it. Guess I"ll just continue to grease it very often, and hope they never fail!

It sounds like you're removing the entire spindle from the axle. Going to the websites below might help identify what you're working on. Also, have you checked the manufacturer's website for the type of trailer you have. They might have a parts breakdown.

Are you talking about the bearing cover or dust cap ? If it is a bearing buddy don't worry they can be bought at any walmart or parts house for less than 15.00 so if it falls abart no problem .

Sorry, no pictures, had to put trailer back together - wife needs it to carry luggage into a rabbit convention in Indianapolis this weekend. Ok, guys, throw out everything you know about wheel bearings - took this thing to my NAPA dealer, and he says that he's never seen anything like it... (And he's a counter man of many years experience!) First of all, the axle shaft is not tapered. When you remove the castellated nut, you find a lock washer, and a flat washer. Then WHOLE bearing assembly slides off the axle. There is a sleeve in the center that bearing rides on... Whole hub, bearing and the sleeve come off as a unit. There appears no way to remove seals and thus the bearing from the hub, or even get inner sleeve out. Grease seals look like they're installed backwards, with lips pointing outward, and a groove which would hold a small coiled spring in the groove. I've seen seals which had similar springs, that were apparently to keep inner lip of seal tight against shaft. These seals have the groove, and the tiny spring on the outside, where they are exposed to the elements, thus rust and corrosion. Hubs have a pressed in Zerk fitting, and can be greased with conventional grease gun. These are not like any conventional wheel bearing ai have seen either - Don't know if it has balls, or rollers or what...

I can't visualize what you're saying. A picture would help.
Only way I've seen any bearings and seals is....a hub, a back seal, a back bearing in the hub riding on a race and then a front bearing riding in a race and then the washer and nut. All are individually replaceable. The grease seals are only a couple of bucks apiece and they can be taken out buy using a drift into the hub and tapping the bearing out with the seal. The race is taken out the same way.

If the bearing and race are smooth and not rough, they just need repacking and reusing. The seals...pretty standard replacement items and some do have the springs you're talking about but I'm not sure that they do a whole heck of a lot. Either way....it's all replaceable.

Bearing buddies go into the race from the front and they are designed to keep constant pressure on the grease in the hub. They do have springs inside them but I've never seen them deteriate. The springs themselves ....you'll probably never be able to find replacements.

That sounds to me like you're looking at a "Bearing Buddy" attached on the wheel hub. It's a spring-loaded grease holder meant to supply grease under pressure to the bearing.
