The latest Fendt 936 has a 7.1 liter Deutz producing 360 hp (european so measured at engine ) how can they get such power out of that capacity while keeping the Fendt reputation for long life ie. 10,000 hour+ wrench free . My JD 4430 produces 150 gross hp from 6.7 liters

That's a lot of horsepower per unit displacement for the Deutz. When you compare that to the Deere, are you comparing a normally aspirated Deere to turboecharged Deutz? Not a fair comparison if you are. The turboed engine had much heavier internal parts and probably a heavier block casting (depending on the tractor structural arrangement), more piston crown cooling and probably a large oil quanity to use as a heat sink for cooling the piston crown as well as more cooling and a hevier transmission to take the larger horsepower, etc, etc etc. The internal loads and temperatures are much higher in a T/C engine and the fuel flow is much higher (got a lot of horses, they eat a lot of oats!). Where did you get the life numbers ("....10,000 hrs + wrench free").Is this the manufacturer's claim? Generally T/C engines require more maintenance and the parts are more expensive. I'm not saying the the Deutz or the Deere are not a good engines, I just think the comparison might not be apples to apples.

The new Deutz engines are liquid-cooled and the one mentioned in the Fendt is probably both inter and after-cooled on the turbo side. Don't under-estimate the power claims or "wrench free" gurantees either. Deutz has been producing engines since before we got the civil war settled here. Their metalurgy is far advanced to ours. This CAN translate into higher H.P. numbers and "wrench free" claims. Also, the John Deere 4430 IS turbo-charged.

Like most modern tractors, it's probably a combination of improved turbo and head design and computerised fuel control. It's the way most big modern tractors are going.
