I have a front end loader on my tractor...it's about 5' wide. Now and then, I use it to dig a hole for plants or some other stuff. I can get away with 5' wide hole often but it would be helpful to have a hole 1/3rd that size..maybe 2' wide. Anyone ever modify or build a much smaller front end loader?

The is loader is on a JD 870 and has a speed disconnect..that is, I can drop the bucket by pulling two pins and mount it just as fast.

What I'm visualizing is a couple of box channels with the same speed attachment points and a smaller bucket welded to them.

Anyone ever do something like that?

There are almost always some skid steer "Stump buckets" listed on Ebay. Look at the pics of them , to get ideas. I bought one from the outfit in NC, it has the standard Quick Attach...

Yup...looked that one up on their website. Looks simple enough. Have you had opportunity to use it? Any positive/negative comments with the disign?

Actually, I have not had the chance to use it yet,I plan to pluck out some stumps during the winter, when the ground is wetter & softer. BTW, they will sell the attachements for less than the Ebay starting price, if you call & order on the phone.

There is an attachment sold by several vendors for Skidsteer loaders and Front-end loaders with quick attach mounts it is called a tree spade. This is not to be confused with the large units with 3 or 4 hydraulic spades/blades for removing larger trees. It is a small bucket for digging holes for transplanting or digging up shrubs and smaller trees or saplings. The following link has one called a "grubber bucket". The link is Link other links can be found by doing a web search for skidsteer attachments. These will give you some ideas to think about if you wish to make one or you may find one that is reasonable to purchase.

Try to find an old back hoe bucket and adapt a quick attach bracket to that, should be alot easier than trying to fabricate a complete bucket.

My son-in-law has a JD 970 with a Koyker loader and got a set of forklift tines and mounting plate at the local scrap yard. He adapted that so it can interchange with the bucket. Works great for pallets and lifting logs. Would be similar to do what you're saying.

We have a set of forks on a skidloader and dig small holes, like you mentioned, with them. Then you have a multi-purpose tool for the loader. Just my 2 cents.

Got lots of scrap iron...will have to scrounge some stuff but I suppose I'll do it. Getting tired of digging with a shovel for when she wants to plant something and sometimes the bigger bucket makes more of a mess than it's worth.
Will send pics.
