One of my buddies who knows I'm looking for a reasonably priced tractor suggested that I check into some of the "salvaged" tractors that were under water due to Katrina. He said that they can be had dirt cheep and after changing all the fluids they should start right up. He said there isn't much electrical on a tractor to worry about (unlike a flooded car) and I should check into them.

I explained the situation to another friend and he said that he wouldn't touch a flooded tractor with a 10 foot pole...

Thoughts from the group?

Thanks,

Scott

I wouldn't buy one either, but I have to tell the only flooded tractor story I know.

Back before I was born, an 8N caught fire on my grandpa's farm. The only thing they could think to do to put the fire out was push the thing into the canal with a truck. The canal was 40' wide and 20' deep.

After pulling the heap out of the water they repaired the damaged wiring, flushed all the fluids and they were still using it when I was a teenager. All the plastic was burned off the steering wheel and there was not a spec of paint on it anywhere, but it ran. It had a loader on it and was used to clear manure out of the corral where the cows waited to be milked.

I guess the moral of the story is if the tractor is pre-historic enough it may withstand a good dunking.....or maybe don't buy a flooded tractor unless it's also been burned!

I bought an older gas JD utility tractor that had slipped into a pond while moving the bank. The owner got another tractor and quickly pulled it out and subsequently flushed the oil systems several times. It seemed to run OK, the price was reasonable and since I only intended to use it for light mowing and possibly small auger work, it was purchased. It has proven to be a complete POS. Based on this experience, I wouldn't touch one of those tractors unless it could be bought for slightly more than scrap price.

Do you have contacts of such tractors and where they are at or are you just hoping to find one.

While you may find some from the gulf coast that were from a farm and were not under water that long they will be beat to He!! because of the wave action of the storm serge.

New Orleans is a city and the only tractors around would be owned by collectors or the city's grass cutting tractors. I have been to the auction for the city and can tell you they will not go cheap. The parts guys will buy them all up to part out.

Both areas were flooded by salt water and any equipment would need to be torn down to remove all residue or rust will set in.

I personally would not buy anything from the Katrina/Rita area.

Make sure that the unit has been cleaned REAL well. The bio-hazard is a major problem with anything that has been flooded do there!!!

I spent a month working the MS, AL, TX and LA (New orleans) areas. Had to be real carefull how and what we touched and then make sure we got cleaned up after words. Most of the tractors that I saw were down in the sugar cane fields and were not flooded. The ones I saw that were flooded were ones that had been sitting for a while before the storm

Flood water from Katrina includes salt water. Salt water or "brine" is highly corrossive. If you were to attempt to gain from this you would have to get a unit which had only been under for a very short period (24 hrs) and get it flushed immediately.

My advice is RUN.

Might be good but from what I have seen with floods and tractors its probably more $$ to fix then worth it. I had one that got flood in a creek and it was full of mud/sand tok it all apart and no matter what I did to it, the thing never ran right again. They make good parts tractors but I think thats about it. My 0.02 worth
