I see a lot of Farmalls advertised and they say that the TA is out or weak on the low side. There is no TA on the high side so why mention it. Just say the TA is out or weak!!!!! !

Many folks don't understand how they work, and saying "TA is out" would probably make them think the whole thing was shot, and the tractor wouldn't move. Unless they wanted a "mechanic's special", they probably wouldn't even respond to the ad.

They've just had one put in....or they need one! I farmed with a lot of IH's. If you could keep people from using them for a brake, and leave'em ahead in the winter months, they lasted a lot longer. I'd take and put'em ahead, then unbolt the handles. Worked good for me!

By the way, what is it about the low side that makes them fail? Does anyone make an after market kit that makes them less prone to fail?

Mornin' Al,

They always try to "sneak it by", don't they? :>)

Kinda like, "Oh by the way, that dog only has three legs". :>)

Human nature,

Allan

Horse feathers Al. High range in the older mechanical TA's depend on a spring applied dry clutch, and the later a hydraulic applied multi disc wet clutch. If either type of high range clutch is out, high range will not work.

That"s strange because the TA is bypassed in high, engaged in low. That is why they were oftem used as a brake. But, I thought that was its purpose--to slow down and let the baler catch up.

Not true. Drive elements within the TA unit must be healthy for the tractor to drive in Direct whether it is an older mechanical TA or a newer style hydraulic TA. It is much more common for a TA to fail on the low side, but certainly not unheard of for it to fail on the direct drive side, especially as related to multiple control valve problems on hydraulic TA's.

99,99 % of the time it is the low side that is out on them or on its way to lunch in all my years of fixen I H's i have yet had one come in with the high side out not sayen that someone did not have the high side fail and i have seen the input shaft sheared off clean a on a 766 gasser now that was a new one on me when my 1486 has not done this YET or my buddys 1066 and if any where to do that it should be either one of the two with the wick turned up as high as they are.
