Well its that time of year. Would like to hear what some of you do for storage. 1. Drain, replace or add additive to antifreeze??
2. Remove to A warm or B cold storage for batteries and how often to charge them?
3. Get your tires on wood or ?
4. Any tips, (especially for below 0) for winter.

Hope to get some good tips that many can use on this one. Thanks

Just a safety tip. If you park your tractor outside where the tires may freeze to the ground, and you need to start it up after a freeze, put it in reverse to break the tires free. If they are frozen to the ground and you put it in a forward gear, it'll flip over on its back. I read of a case of that happening many years ago (with fatal results)when I lived in Indiana and it has stayed with me all these many years.

Hi Bob,not sure if i can add much to the exellent tips already posted but i can let you know what we do to prep our tractors for the winter.Up here in Pei,although it may be hot in the summer,it gets !#@&*$# c-c-c-cold in winter! We change the anti-freeze every second year to protect the jackets and mix to -45 degrees,on the years we don't change it,we check it(just in case someone added water during the crop seasons and forgot). We also unhook the positive batt cable to prevent possible draining. Also,if we get a chance,we start the engine once every month or two,so long as it is in a WELL VENTELATED AREA to refresh the battery and keep her freed up,if you can't do this, then just test the battery with a tester and re-charge if neccesery. If it works here,it'll work anmost anywhere.

Just how cold does it get that far Noth Bob lol?? Do the terms Well Diggers ... or Witches ... or Brass Monkeys ... come into play lol

Heres my thoughts, this is always a good question to hear how others do this, great topic considering its October

1) When I change n flush anti freeze, I been using distilled water cuz I figure its got less rust or iron or calcium etc which may coat the radiator. I add water pump lube and pre mix it 50/50 (anti freeze/water) before refilling.

2) As far as gas, I use Sta Bil (to reduce gum n varnish settling out) PLUS mix a lil bit of low ash 2 cycle oil (think it may leave a thin film oil coat n may reduce rusting inside the carb),,,,, ,,I run that witches brew a lil to coat the carb but then then I drain the carb but I prefer the gas tank be kept full to reduce condensation plus theres less air in contact with the tanks sheet metal so less rusting

3) Its good to use a trickle charge battery maintainer if left out in the cold, otherwise I would store them indoors and maybe still give em a lil trickle charge now n then. Have them topped off with electrolyte

4)) Its good to remove the plugs n squirt some oil in the cylinders n crank her a lil to oil coat the cylinders

5) I prefer to leave the points in the OPEN position (may take plug removal so no compression to get em there)

6) I dont like the tires on wet ground, maybe use blocks or rubber as insulation.

Actually its even better to exercise them now n then or at least crank her over now n then to exercise the valves etc. Im also a believer in running Marvel top oil lube in the oil for valve system protection.

This would make an ad for Stabil. My elderly dad has a small motorcycle that hadn't been run in 2 years. He was going to sell it, it needed a battery. I put in a battery and opened the gas cap. I dreaded what I would smell, and the tank was full. But dad had added Stabil and the gas smelled okay. I hit the start button and in 5 seconds it showed signs of life. In a few more seconds it was running. I took dad for a ride on his old cycle. He liked it so well he decided it wasn't for sale.

As long as you are sure there is no water in the diesel, don't worry about it - it will be fine next year. If you are unsure about water, get some biocide and add to it.
