Hey some of you expert mechanics. This isn't a tractor question, but it is on a diesel. I have a grandson going to college and he drives a 82 mercedes 300D, The glo plugs last about 6 mo.'s and burn out. Is this normal, or is something wrong? Thanks in advance.

Are all the glow plugs going out? Or is it just one or two? Some brands are better than others. Give me a little more info and I'll try to help.

WE checked them yesterday, and all were out. They were all autolite. I'm sure they didn't all go out at once, but the cool weather caused the car to be hard to start. Thanks for any help you can give.

Are you sure the controller is cycling properly? Sounds like the glo plugs are staying on all the time, which would account for their short life. I"m not familiar with Mercedes controllers, but there shouldn"t be power on the glo plugs for more than a short time (10"s of seconds??) after the engine starts.

Autolite glo plugs have a terrible reputation, deserved or not. I"ve run Motorcraft (made by Beru) in my diesel pickups with good luck.

Might want to connect a test light to one of the wires feeding the glo plugs & see if power cycles correctly.

Good luck,

Keith

I'm not sure about the mercedes, but when I have two go out on my truck its a bi_ch to start. The relay will start kicking out early and the good ones that are left will not cycle long enough. I check mine with the test light. Does his car cycle them manualy or auto?

Glen2, I watch my voltmeter for correct operation of the plugs. When the volts quit drawing I hit the starter. I ignore the wait to start light. When the voltmeter starts bouncing around I know I've got a bad plug or two. That's when I get the test light out and go to checking. I haven't changed all 8 out at the same time in a long time. But, having all plugs working is crucial. KEB is right if the controller stays in too long it will burn them up.

Give them a try. They should be able to help you more than I. Mostly what I know about glow plugs are on my old 7.3 IDI. Motorcraft are the preferred g.p.'s for it.
Auto-lite's are junk!!!
