I have a JD 4010 tractor that I use to haul manure in the winter. It has no cab. I've often wondered if there was a way to somehow plumb a long heater hose into the block and run it up to and close to the steering wheel that I could use to keep my hands warm. I can keep all of my body warm except my hands and they freeze! Have any of you guys ever done anything like this and if so how did you do it? I could sure use some help. Thanks

I put heat in our 4010 a few years ago. Many years ago the water pump went and the dealership broke the casting rebuilding it. The replacement pump had a port on the top. I beleive it was originally for a early model 4020.

I removed the plug from the port and installed a barbed fitting. I installed a Tee in the heater hose running to the tank type block heater(Yes, I live in Canada. )The heater was originally intended for use is a skid steer loader and simply re-circulates air in the cab rather than heating fresh air coming in. I installed a ball valve between the tee and the heater. Everything was plumbed with 5/8 heater hose.

You need to be plumbed into the water pump to provide positve flow through the lines. This is how ALL heaters using engine coolant as a heat source, work. The ball valve acts as temperature control by controling the flow of hot engine coolant to the heater. The heater had its own built in fan.

One word of advise. The cab on our 4010 is full of holes and lets in a lot of air on a windy day and the effectiveness of the heater drops off quickly. Trying to keep your hands warm by blowing hot air on them might not work very well. I agree with the other posters who said get a cab or a heat houser. You will be much more comfortable and happier.

My two cents.

John

third party image

I got one from Femco last year for our 1855 Ollie. We also have one for our Massey 285, sold by MF and marked as such back when it was new, turns out it was made by Femco as well. Very good construction, kept me plenty warm while plowing last year.

used cabs are cheap and most can be fited with a heater to keep all of you warm.

They make electric hand and thumb warmers for snowmobiles. Don't exactly know how you'd attach them to a steering wheel vs. handlebars. They work really well, though.

What ever happened to "heat housers"? Canvas from around engine and back to driver. Used to be every body had one on their winter loader tractor.

might be worth a try. I warm my hands on the hydraulic hose that comes up to the loader controls.

And if the hose gets cold, just run the pump against the relief valve for awhile :<)

Your tractor's cooling system is probably suffering from the cold as bad as Your hands. I'd look for a pair of "ELECTRIC GLOVES" An internet search should find You something.
