I'm in the process of purchasing a John Deere 2305 compact tractor. I need a snow blower but this model only has a rear PTO which means a rear snow blower. Anyone ever use a rear snowblower on any tractor before? Does it get painful to keep backing up all the time?? I love the tractor but I'm just thinking I'll get sick of backing up all the time to do my driveway (which is about 300 feet). Any comments??

I have a 84 inch 3pt rear pull blower on JD 4020 and it works great. I have used the rear pull type for over 15 years. As long as the tractor can drive through the snow you can blow it. I have blown snow deep enough with snow going over the front axle. On a very rare ocasions I have had to back into a drift but it averages only one or two times a season. So it averages to less than 10 min per season. I only own 2wd tractors and the tires are not loaded. The only thing posibly better than the rear pull is a front mount but I would prefer to have it on a 4wd as the blower weight is out front. They also cost a fair bit more $$. I have used the backup type before and hope never to have to again. Twisting around all the time to see where you need to blow is no fun !!! About the main thing these are good for is moving snowbanks or real small straight drives. Using a snowblower to start with eliminates 99% of the snowbank problems. The rear mount blowers cost the least but are harder on the operator to use. I paid a little extra and got the rear pull and am glad I did. My back and neck feel a lot better after spending 2 hours blowing snow. I do my own place and a couple neighbors. One other item that is very nice to have is a cab or at least a heat houser. The 2 stage type blowers are the best for wet heavy snow as the auger feeds it into the blower fan. I would look into geting a rear pull or a front mount blower.

They do sell a front blower but it's double the price of a rear blower.

Unless you have helth issues, the rear blower will be fine.

I'm not too crazy about the forward-facing rear blowers that some are mentioning: Either you drive over the snow first & pack it down, can't clear a _gravel_ road very well at all - might work on tar ok tho. Or, if you get drifts like I do - 3 feet high or better - then you can only nibble at the snow, back up, forward, back up, forward. Yish. If you do not get drifts at all & have all paved roads, perhaps they work out ok, but they do not work in my conditions.

do it all time no big deal but unless you have a cab you will find out that you will be covered some times with snow yourself. I extended the throw chute etc on my unit. i do two miles of county road, cant wait for the county to do it.

Why back up??? This place sells a "quality" snow blower that goes on the 3 point, but you pull it. Yes, it works really well!!

95% of the blowers around here (southern Minnesota) are 3pt blowers. I spend 2-3 hours blowing out the yard after every snow. No big deal?

If you have a 4wd compact then this is no big deal, but i would _hate_ a front blower on a real tractor, all that weight up front, ick.

I run a 7 foot rear blower with either my 7700 (85hp) or 1720 (27 hp) Fords. The 1720 has a real slow low, the 7700 has a lot of power, so either work fine. The 7700 has a cab for when it is below zero.... ;)

Rear mounted facing forwards worked fine on the 8N.Deep drifts - back in take a bite.Don't take long to make path.then you got it made.

I've seen bigger tractors that are set up with a roller chain and 2 sprockets on the back and a shaft runs to the front snowblower. Search around abit.

99% of blowers I see are mounted on the back of tractors
