In post below about lending out equipment, Redmud gives cause for telling people no. Got me thinking. Here is my best story, can ya top it?

Years ago after my father passed away and I was farming by myself I had need for a trailer to hitch behind the pickup so I could haul seed and fertilizer to the field, then drive the truck back home and go back with the tractor and planter and plant, you guys who do things on your own know what I mean. So I go purchase a brand new Fruehauf two axle pintle hitch trailer. Of course all my buddies needed a trailer to haul their junk cars etc and it became a "neigborhood " trailer. Decided ground was getting fit for corn and had to go find (as usual) my trailer so I could load it up. Buddy didnt want to give it up but saw my blood pressure rising and unloaded his clunker and let me have it. Took it home and Ma and I loaded 4 ton of bag fertilizer and seed corn on it. Next day I come home from work swing the barn doors open and my trailer was gone and the fertilizer and seed was neatly stacked back on the floor!. Another so-called buddy had taken the trailer. Went in the house and handed mom a piece of paper with the discription and price and told her to place a for sale add in the paper next time she was in town. Couple day later ole buddy #1 comes to the house and wants to know where the trailer is? Told him I didn"t know, didn"t care because I sold it. He says, well if I woulda known I would have bought it. I told him in the 4 years Id owned it he had it more than me, knocked the lights off, ruined tires and never once offered to pay so why would I have thought he would buy it??? 10 years later I don"t farm anymore get into collecting tractors and buy a gooseneck lowboy. Wife says, why do you want a gooseneck? I tell her because they ride nice and every SOB on the planet cant ask to borrow it because they dont have the hitch. So I get my shiney new trailer, back it in beside the garage and before I ever get to use it guess what? Same Ole buddy stops by and wants to borrow it, AND MY TRUCK! I am sure the whole county heard me tell him NO!!! with referances to hadies in front of the NO

Hmm, spose we've probably most been through it.

Late, late, late one Saturday evening once a "friend" stopped over to borrow one of my pickups, his hot water heater had gone out, needed to get one the following day. Ok, he had a wife and children, no problem. Next day I was out and about and saw his wife driving down the road with one of her girlfriends in my pickup. Hmm, figured maybe needed fittings or such for the new water heater, sent the wife to the hardware (they both had cars???), but no problem, so long as they filled the tank back up when returned it. Sunday comes and goes, no truck - no problem, will return it Monday after work, I suppose. Monday evening, my buddy tools up about half tanked up with his golf clubs in the back of the bed "Didn't get around to it Sunday (for whatever reason), and the day (Monday) was so nice, went out golfing with some buddies (and drinking in my truck), but would take the following day (Tuesday) off, and go get a hot water heater, so needed my truck another day". I didn't say much, drove him and his clubs across town to his house and tossed them both out on the lawn and took my truck back with almost an empty tank. His wife and kids hadn't showered since at least Saturday night the way I figured it, and that wasn't nice, but wasn't my problem. We're not friends anymore, and the story goes that is "my" fault for screwing him over in a time of need.

Yep, spose we've all been there, done that.

Mark

I thought of this after reading jhills' post. Several years ago, my Brother n law came by and wanted to borrow my bandsaw, we loaded it in his truck, and he hauled it to his hobby shop. I stopped by his house one saturday morn after he had used it for about 6 months or so, he was having a yard sale, and my saw was right out front with a price tag attached. I asked what the hill he thought he was doing? He just said he was thru with it, and it was in his way. We loaded it in my truck, it's back in my shop, and he missed another sale.

I am amazed at your self control..... .

After we would have reloaded it into my truck he would have been looking for some cotton to stop the nose bleed from a right hook.

have the same problem in neighborhood I have a nice 16' flat bed tandem trailer and I plan on keeping it that way .well it's been real dry so we haul a lot of water around here so I pulled out an old fertlizer spreader that we made into a trailer and it's nice and short but when they neighbors have to haul water they always cry bacause I won't let them use the new trailer to pull instead of this piece of crap worn out spreader and since I own the only hitch pin for miles around thwy complain about it being unsafe but they still hook on to it and use it any way what do they expect for free .

A friend of mine loaned one of his friends his table saw. When the guy was done he sold it and kept the money. Said my friend didn't need it anymore anyway.

I hate to ask neighbors to borrow anything because its always my luck that it will break when I'm using it. The other day I needed a gas powered pressure washer and broke down and borrowed a friends. Sure as heck it broke down on me. I ended up putting a new carburetor on it before returning it.

Had a neighbor who borrowed my Oliver 550 tractor- came over with hat in hand and said the clutch had gone out (it had been weak for awhile)- he had the tractor split and was going to complete the repair without even telling me, but couldn't find a clutch plate. I finally talked him into letting me pay for half of the parts, but he refused to take anything for his labor. This is the same guy who hired a machinist to repair the bull gear in my baler, and wouldn't take a nickel. Wish I could have taken him with me as a neighbor when we moved. Needless to say, he can borrow anything from me, anytime.

Along that same line, back in the early 90's, I had a brand new truck... One Saturday, an older guy knocked on the door, said he was moving in down the road, & needed to pick up a sofa, a few miles away... Had the nerve to ask if he could borrow my truck... I told him if he would wait an hour, I would take him to get it...He got mad & started cursing, Insisting that I loan truck to him right now..Thought I was going to have to kick his A$$, LOL... He left... But he never did move in the house down the road, I never saw him again... I am convinced he was a Con Man... Anyone dumb enough to loan him a vehicle would have lost it...

Loaned my flatbed tilt trailer to a "friend" that picked it up while I was at work. The wiring didnt match his truck so he spent the afternoon rewiring THE TRAILER connector instead of changing his connector to fit my trailer. Then he couldn`t remember how it was originally. I scalded him so bad he never came by again. Good thing was, I had a copy of the schematic in my trucks glove box and got it back together in no time. His truck was not wired to standard and the trailer was.

Usually , if I end up Borrowing something I end up fixing it up . Buddies boat ,,Fix trailer lights , pack brgs . Buddies 1 ton dump truck , box was shot , got bent up when i used it . I ended up rebuilding whole frame of box . Buddy did see how badly rusted it was and bought the iron at least . But I figure if i use if shouldn't mind tuning it up or fixing lights ,,etc . I had guy use my trailer and truck ,,Brought truck back FULL of fuel ,,was empty or very low when he took it . Very nice of him . I try to do that also .

My father in law is one of these guys who is always twisting bolts off cause if a little is good then a lot will be great. He borrowed my 16' flat bed trailer to haul a small amount of dirt. I was there when he got home. The dirt was piled higher than my head from front to back, And I'm 6'3". He had blown all four tires and the spare and sheard off three or four lug bolts. He had replaced the tires on his way home with used car tires. When he parked it the rear of the trailer was so bowed it was rubbing the ground. When I got the trailer back in a few days three of the tires he bought seperated and had the steel belts popping out of them. Cost me a set of tires and some bearings and lug bolts just to loan it out. Couldn't say a whole lot cause had to keep peace with the wife. But even she wasn't too happy about it. Did I forget to mention the crushed in fender?

Trailers do have a habit of getting abused in that manner. Local ACE rents their 20' bumper hitch for $25.00 a day. I've rented it about 4 times a year, can't insure and tag your own for that money, let alone pay for one.

Neighbor came over a couple weeks ago to borrow that car trailer I "have" (thought I kept it locked in a shed). He thought $25.00 was too much for rent so he found another to borrow, then he called and wanted to know if I had an "extra" 15" tire to put on the trailer he borrowed.

I seem to recall someone on one of these boards a few years back saying he'd had the gooseneck hitch installed with the ball on the truck bed so it couldn't be pulled with anyone else's truck!

I also have had people want to borrow my gooseneck trailer, and when they find out you need the gooseneck hitch also, then they want to borrow my truck to pull it with. I solved that problem by telling them "sure you can borrow the truck and trailer, but I am the only one who will be driving it, and it will cost you a buck a mile from the time we leave until we get back". Problem solved.

I'm of the mind that if you have to borrow something more than once, then you need to buy one of your own.

a (ex) friend wanted to borrow my 16" lowboy trailer for a few hours. i asked what did he need it for. he said he had to haul 2 pallet loads of bricks. whoa! that"s a lot of weight for a trailer with a gross weight rating of 3150 lbs. he says it will be ok, "i"ve done it before with other trailers". i says ok, go borrow the other trailers then. now you see why he is an ex-friend."Never a borrower nor a lender be". that"s good solid advise.

I can feel your pain. I have the same problem. I have a trailer and everyone loves to borrow it. One guy comes in at 11:30 at night and gets it, overcharges the battery for the winch, drags the chains on the road while he is hauling and "forgets" to bring it back. I have to hunt for my tools when I need to use them. I finally said to leave fifty bucks when they come out to borrow anything and I will deduct the price when they come back.

Well, I dont know. I and a neighbor worked together, mostly putting up hay. We would borrow each others equipment as needed and always with permission. When we were done the machine would get cleaned up and greased and be ready to go for the next time.Never borrowed tractors tho.

We've got a neighbor that has been on both side of this topic with us. They've borrowed our Massey 165 gasser to run they're CatI hay rake(all they had running were their 2-135 and 100 Whites) They ran it on the generator while milking as well 'cause the 100 was tied up, parked on the chopper 100 ft. away. Well, that was the end of THAT PTO clutch. We ended up finding it shot a month later when we were unloading wagons w/ it. They use & abuse our stuff(havent borrowed ours in many years).

This summer while we were borrowing the other neighbor's swather, I snapped the drive chain and ruined the clutch disc. Well, the ones who use & abuse happened to have an identical one sitting in their shed for parts. Low and behold, they had it 1/2 ripped out already because they needed the belt. They even helped put it in!!

We also borrow their 2 chopper boxes so we can fill 4 at a time. We grease them up and check them out. We won't even hook on if we notice something while it's still in their yard. They used to be REALLY bad w/ maintnance, but now his son is in his 30's and is running more and more of the stuff, although it's not much of a farm anymore. No cattle, just chunks of land here & there between the soil being stripped and the soil being developed.

THAT'S the way ALL people should 'borrow' things! My Dad taught me to ALWAYS return something in better condition than when I got it. I've never ignored that lesson and even when I was a kid, my friends used to ASK me to borrow their bikes. I would honestly be ashamed to return something knowing the owner was going to be unhappy I'd used it.
