Hey guys, got 20 acreas of wheat to plant. want to drop the starter fertilizer with the seed right out of the drill...how much 18-46-0 or 11-52-00 can I drop per acre right with the seed and not burn the seed? THis is OHio and I expect some rain to dilute the fertilzer....I do NOT plan on broadcasting any fertilizer until spring.
Thanks!

We used to use the fertilizer box all the time when sowing wheat but what was put on then was at a rate of 200# per acre of 3/12/12 and later 6/24/24 with no problem and after the old horse drawn drills from before fertilizer they all had both boxes along with a grass seed box and you never seen a drill without the fertilizer box untill about the time the notill drills came out, this is in west central Ohio

Can you seperate so the fert gets dropped 'on top' of the ground, not down a tube at all? If in front of the disks, the fert would work in enough with just the blades & chains, and likely you drag or harrow your seed bed after planting anyhow, so would be worked in fine. Then you can put on what you normally apply, shouldn't be a problem.

If it _must_ go down the same tube, hum, I'm not sure what to say. Small grains are a small crop here, not much info or experience as to how much salt or burn can be in the same trench on seed contact.

I know small grains can get mixed with fert & then broadcast all at once, but that is different from putting it all in the same trench.

Just, not enough experience with such a thing.

What kind of drill do you have again, very rare to see any with fert attachments 'here'. Mostly clover/alfalfa attachment is standard 'here'.

You can rent a ground driven unit from your local ag dealer or he may let you use it for free if you buy from him. Either way the cost is small. Don't honk up your planting or waste your fertilizer money just because you don't have the right type drill or your pto is out. Do it right...

If you have fert box on your drill (that is _rare_ here, but I hear of it in other locations?) fine. The seed will go in the rows, and the fert will drop & be incorporated, shouldn't be a problem.

No way, no how, would I ever try to run fertilizer through the same box as the seed. Would wreck the drill, would be uneven planting, couldn't run enough fert to help anyhow, salt issues on seed contact. Ick.

Are you saying the drill has a fetilizer box or are you going to try and mix the seed and the fertilizer together in the seed box?? I think that would be pretty hard to do a good job unless you make two passes. Whatever you do you better wash it out good and throw some fuel oil in when you're done.

You can't mix the seed and fertilizer, they are differn't density.....as you move asross the field they will "un-mix" and one will run out befor the other.....run a small load as a test..... Don

When you use the fertilizer box on a drill it is a pain in the rear to clean, and it will still rust out.

We are in Ohio too. Why not broadcast the fertilizer in the fall? When I worked for a dealer 40 years ago nobody wanted fertilizer attachments for their grain drills. We broadcast in the fall and in the spring also. Questions? What part of Ohio

the problem is that the fertilizer drops in the same furrow as the seed. if this is all you have to work with then recomend that you apply the fertilzer at an angle to the field first pass deep, then second pass drill the seed at a different angle to the field and shallower.
Good luck
Ron
