What are you folks useing to control fire ants? I have about 3 acres (non cropland)that they are starting to be a problem. Sevin has a new product out this year, but will be kind of expensive for an area this size. How about the regular farm chemicals, any luck with these. The ortho will just make them pack up and start another mound. I know there's no way to get completely rid of them, just want to know how y'all are dealing with them. Thanks

The best product I have found is "amdro" hands down

I have had pretty good luck on my 1 acre lot by broadcasting Amdro. I use a small hand held broadcast spreader and spread a one pound can per acre, rather than trying to treat each mound as they pop up.

Yancey, here in Central Texas, we use Award brand called "Logic" Looks like wet coarse yellow corn meal. It is along term product. Stops the reproduction cycle.takes about 60 days. This is usually applied in the spring and sometimes in the fall. You nees a slinger to apply it.
For mound application I use Seven powder. Take a mayonaisse jar punch a bunch of holes in it with an icepick and then treat each mound as you walk around your yard. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

We had a bad outbreak of them around my place a few years ago. After my roomates son got into a mound and got stung over 100 times I went on a rampage against them. I know I didn't get every mound but I went over my 4.5 acres, the neighbors field across the street which is about 5 acres, as well as up and down the sides of the road a ways in both directions from my place and sprayed every mound I could find with Diazanon. I'd start in a circle about 4 feet out from the nest and spray everything, working in to the center and then soak the mound, usually using the force of the spray to punch a hole down into the mound. I know for a fact that when I sprayed them the nests died off completely. There was one that was as mounded up as big as a 5 gallon bucket that I sprayed. The day after I sprayed it I went back with a shovel and have yet to see anything living in it. That first year I can't even begin to count the number of mounds I sprayed. In the couple of years since either the majority of them have gotten way better at hiding their digs or finally decided their fighting a natural enemy they can't beat because I haven't found but two small nests since...and I sprayed the he-- out of them too....Unfortunately Diazanon worked so their not making it anymore, probably not enviromentaly friendly since it actually killed the pests you sprayed it on. Instead their making Triazanon or something like that and I don't know how if it works or not. if you can get hold of the old origional Diazanon though I guarantee you it'll work.
