Just had the auto transmission in my (new to me) 1995 F150 with a 300 motor and an E40D transmission flushed and filter changed - 88000 miles. There was no problem with the trans , just thought it was time to do a change. The shop said that transmission and engine was an unusual combination in that it is a fairly heavy-duty trans. Any comments on this combination or trans ??

FoMoCo did have some problems with that tranny.

At around 80,000 miles, my '93 F-150 had a chatter and chug when it shifted into over drive. Did alot of research on it because 3 differant shops said it needed a rebuild.

Finally found one that said they had rebuilt alot of them, but found out that a flush and filter fixed 98% of them.

Did that and it worked fine afterwards.

I'm driving a 94 F-150 with a 302 and the E40D. It was pampered for the first 39000 miles, then I bought it in 1998. I've ran the you know what out of it. Abused it. Over-loaded it. Pulled trailers that were way to heavy often.

It started acting funny at somewhere close to 100,000 miles. I changed the fluid and filter and it worked like a new one til about 175,000 miles. Same thing happened - so I changed the fluid and filter again.

Now, at 210,000 miles, it's starting to act funny. I'm gonna change her again and see how many miles I can squeeze out of it.

Like I said, I've worked this one HARD and I can't complain with it's performance. For what it's done and been through, if it quit tomorrow - I'd have to say it's been a good one!

Mitch

That is the "heavy duty" transmission, standard auto for the F250 and F350, comparable to the old C6, while the AODE is comparable to the old C4. Keep the oil changed in it and it will last as long as the the engine.

I had an '88 with 302 and E4OD tranny. Engine was a little weak but the tranny was fine...."the metric" they called it.

I don't know anything about automatics, but those 300 are absolutely bullet proof. I've got an '88 2wd w/ the 300 and Mazda 5 sp. overdrive tranny. Can't say nough about it. About 160-170,000 miles (speedo drive gear in tranny broke 2-3 years ago)on the original clutch, at times pulling up to 8 ton loads of hay. Pull lots of loads w/ it, that 300 just grits her teeth and pulls through.

Jim, I have a 95 F350 4X4 460 ci with less than 90K miles lost all forward drive clutches pulling 16 ft trailer with a 3/4 T chev aboard. Not impressed with this trans. If I was closer would holler at Allen, since he worked on Auto's. I haven't worked on an auto trans since got out of military in 1968. How do this???..ALLAN..ALLAN..LOL...Keith

Heavy yes. Heavy duty, laughable. My 94 has had that e4od replace 4 times in the course of 5 years. Factory rebuilds with all the updates($2500). Three different shops and two different trans. The only good thing I can say aboutit it won't last thru the warrenty. Couldn't pull itself out of a rut without puking all the fuild out. If you us it as a car you'll be ok, just never, NEVer, NEVER try to pull anything and if you find yourself stuck in the mud call a wrecker.

Seroiusly take very good care of it and do not over work it. Make sure it has a good aftermarket cooler installed and keep the fuild full at all times. I have been drivin fords all my life. The e4od is by far their biggest POS as far as trucks are concerned.

68 F150 - great old truck bullet proof 352 V8 3sp
76 F100 - Plain Jane I6 3sp
78 F250 - 351M go getter auto
81 F150 - Loved it so much I stuck a 1 ton 4x4 frame under it
85 GMC - Everyone makes mistakes, this burnt down because of chevy's 700r4 trans issues
86 F150 - Should have waited one more year
94 Explorer - kid room
94 F150 - Looking for a 4x4 a4od..... ..
85 F250 - to do all the work (1 ton rating)

It's funny, Errin, how some folks have so much trouble with stuff!

I'm not really a Ford man, but my BIL got 240,000 out of the E4OD in his 1992, and that really impressed me. And he wasn't always nice to it, either!

Hey Jim,
Ya it`s plenty overkill, but fairly common.
Then you`ll see the F150 w/5.0 or 5.8 with an AODE behind it. Go figure. GM did the same type of thing for years, running the 700/4L60E behind everything from a 4cyl S10 to a light 3/4 ton.
Most of the problems you see with the E4OD come from bigger trucks with more horse/torque that get the snot worked out of them.
Good Luck Brokenwrench

Hi Jim,

I've been rebuilding automatic trannys since I was a pup. That tranny is one of the toughest out there.

I'm not really a Ford guy, but all of their trannys are "just a little stronger", IMHO due to the way they are sealed.

Allan

Yes, that is a very HD tranny, versions were even used on the Powerchokes. I have no idea how many were ordered for the 6-cylinder application, though!

Thanks fellas ---- I can always depend on getting good advice from you folks !! As with most pick-ups , this truck will either carry nothing or be temporarily abused at times. B.T.W. first 1/2 ton I ever had was a 1970 Fargo (Dodge) with the slant 6 and an automatic trans. One of the first with an automatic in the neighbourhood ----- ---everyone said she'd never last. Can't begin to tell you the abuse that truck went through with absolutely no problems. Dealers sold a lot more automatics after the neighbours caved in.
