I was just wondering what is the thing you have to be certified under to be a steam engine operator and is there any online places you can take to get certified. Thanks

The Ozark Steam Engine Assoc. is having a operator class in March of 2006. They are located in Republic, MO. I think they said cost was $25.00

Jamason, In Washington State the cities of Seattle, Tacoma and Spokane require their own Steam Engineers Licenses. Each city has different tests for their various stages of licensing. Years ago the National Association of Power Engineers or NAPE tried to get a national license going but it fell through since the feds didnt want to take on another certification process. In some instances insurance companies may require some sort of license or certificate of learning to operate the boilers and engines in order to write a policy on a collector or exhibitor. You may check with the various insurance companies to see what they require. After operating steam plants for 45 years I am retired and on Coldiron now. How far are you willing to go to learn as much as you can about steam?

Depends on which state. Some require a boiler operators lisence, others don't. I would contact your states board of labor and standards.

Rules differ from state to state. Some of the bigger shows have their own steam schools to train operators and it is a very worthwhile class. I went to one at Mt Pleasant last spring. Contact them for details.
