John deere T 14 baler in reply to cd in tx, 09-25-2005 19:51:39
I am looking at buying a T14 baler by John Deere,Not sure of the year of production. Any comments on what to look for on the T 14 (pro or con) baler.Apparently it works fine but some input from you guyw with experience with vintage balers would be much appreciated. Thanks David

cd. my IH 46 had a 2 cyl Wisconsen on it, worked well, in really good heavy hay I wished for a few more hp though. I don't know how heavy or hard you will use it, but like I said, you may find yourself waiting for it to catch up sometimes.

cd,

I second all the other guys have said. The proof of the baler is in the bales that it makes. It is probably obvious, but one way to test it without having to mow and rake a hay field, is to fork some loose hay into it while it is sitting stationary and see how the bales come out. I wouldn't consider buying it without seeing bales coming out of the back of it.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Your post is a little short of info.
What Model is it?
When last run?
Will it start?
How long has current owner had it?

Ask to take it for a test run. NH made these balers into the 80's, so it may not be terribly old.

Looks aren't what really counts on a baler, it's how good it works. Don't offer more than you can afford to lose for an old baler. If you can start it and run a few bales though and see that it ties good, then it's worth alot more in my eyes. You didn't say what model, but by it having an old wisconsin motor on it, it must be quite old and alot of them have been wore out, but they can still look good, so beware!.
Hope this helps.
