The 2N was the war time tractor and when it came out, no electricals, just mag ignation ans steel wheels with a hand crank and a chock rod thru the grill, was just a year or two that they were back to being equiped the same as the 9N's were. Most obvious differences were the 2N hood had the mounting bolts thru the doglegs and the 9N had hidden hood mounting, and the 9N had the I beam wishbone and 2N the oval and the 2N steering wheel was bare spoke while the 9N was all rubber covered

I believe the major difference is that WWII wage & price controls had been put in place. That meant Henry couldn't raise the price on the 9N so he produced a "New Tractor", the 2N. Since it was new, it could have a new (and higher) price.

Other differences are very few and very small.

One other difference between the 9N and the 2N is when you own a 2N and people ask you what kind of tractor you have, you say "a Ford 2N" and then they get this blank look on their face an go, "Oh, what's that?" Many people don't realize that 2N's exist.

And some of them will tell you that no such model ever existed.

They were basically the same. 2N was introduced in 1942 and had several small differences to 9N. Most of them were due to war-time shortages in rubber, copper, and other materials (magnetos instead of batteries, steel rims instead of rubber tires, etc).

They are basically identical in appearance and horsepower, having minor differences of more interest to purists and collectors, than actual differences in operation. Both have 3-speed transmissions.

The 9N was the earlier model, intoduced in 1939.

The 2N was the later model, introduced in 1942.

The 8N was introduced for 1948 (late 1947?), and is considered by some to be more desirable because of slightly more HP, a 4-speed transmission, and the added feature of depth control on the 3-point hitch.

Any of the three models could have an aftermarket auxillary transmission installed, giving overdrive, or underdrive, or over, direct, and under, depending upon the specific unit installed.

Didn't the 8N also put the brake pedals both together on the right side ? For those of us that don't have 2 left feet.

Yes the 8n has both brake pedals on the right; not one on either side like the 9N and 2N.

Not much, just details and improvements.
Same engine, trany, rear end. 8N is different, better engine, 4-speed trany, new hydraulic, ...
9N : began mfg in 1939
2N : began mfg in 1942, then up to 1947
8N : began mfg in 147, year model 1948.
