Tires for pickup

Hey guys, I need some advice on pickup truck tires. I drive a 2002 Chevy 1500 ex cab Z71 4X4 pickup. It still has the stock tires on it: P265/75R16, Firestone Wilderness AT. Most of the time I drive this pickup like a car, around town and on the interstate. However, I do occasionally pull a 18' bumper hitch trailer with a JD B or Farmall H on it. I also do some off-road driving on the farm and when I'm hunting (every chance I get) I live in N.IL so snow is a concern. Any suggestions on a better replacement tire. I'd like more traction, and a beefier look, without too much compromise on fuel economy, ride or road noise. Could I go up a size (I don't want to have to install a lift kit)What suggestions would you have for brand and size.
Thanks

Be a MAN! get yourself a 12" suspension lift, a 3"body lift and a set of Super Swamper TSL 44's Uuurrahh!! and let Tim "The Tool MAN" Allen help you install it.
Just kidding. Seriously though the BFG A/T K/O's are excellant off road, provide a good stable quiet hwy ride, get good milage and are by far one of the best looking tires on the market especially with the white letters facing out. The BFG M/T look and perform even more aggressive especially in mud and snow, but are slightly (not bad) more noisy and wear slightly (not bad) quicker. As far as size is concern your truck should be able to handle 285x75r16 easily without changing rims (no noticable change in hwy gear or gas milage). Dont know if you know it or not but you can level the front of the truck and the truck will sit higher and look more aggressive, without over kill. I would suggest a set of BFG A/T or M/T 285x75r16's on the factory rims, and level the front for a nice clean looking yet capablely aggressive truck. Just be carefull that you don't get the OFF-Road fever. Its almost as bad as accuteinfectoustractoridous!!!!!

You mentioned "leveling" out the front end. This is something I'd like to do. Especially because the truck has air springs on the rear to balance out trailer tongue wt. so it sits a little higher in the rear end. How do you level the front? What type of kit do you need to accomplish this?

I went to the Michelin LTX M/S tires. Had 2 sets of BFGoodrich, never could get them balanced.

I'm a fan of the Bridgestone Dueler AT tires. That's what I ran on my 2002 Z71 when the firestones wore out.

I would not recommend going up a size on that particular pickup. I would go with either the Micelin LTX M/S or the BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A . Either of these tires will give you a good on road performance, the Michelin has a slight edge there. Off road the BF Goodrich would outdo the Michelin. These tires are made by the same company, as Michelin owns BF Goodrich. I hope this helps. JohnG

DJL, My old 97 (new style) F-150, 4x4, has just under 280k miles on it I have run 5 different sets of tires on it. To date the best tire I have found for my truck and I run it very simular to yours is the current set of P265/75-16 Radial Stampeed tires, Load range E,yes, I said Es. Got them last Christmas @ NTB. Will not go back to a load range C. Just everyday driveing I run 35 lbs. When I pull a trailer, then I airup the rears to higher lbs depending on the load. The tread pattern is a M&S pattern so there isn't any road noise to speak of..... . My $.02

My vote is for BFG all-terrain T/A"s. I wont put anything else on my pickup. Great in the winter, quiet on the road and hard to beat in the dirt.

My vote for Michelin LTX M/S. Also, don't recommend that you increase tire size. Depending on what ratio diff you have, larger tires will gear it up, and you may find yourself driving a gutless wonder when you pull the trailer; also, gas milage can go down.

Excellent tires those Mich LTX. I have a set of four on steel rims for winter use. I bought the stiffer and tougher 10 ply.

I've got some Sport Kings on my truck now, 88 F150. Im getting great milage. They have quite a big lug on them also. I've only got 2wd, but after I put them on I've gotten out of some pretty slick/muddy spots in the feild. I've been runnning them for I think 3 years now 15000 miles a year and they are still holding up, even wear, and overall not too bad. They do hum a little bit, but not nearly as bad as some others.

While I can"t argue with the Mich XPS, I would advise a serious look at BF Goodrch All Terrain for a mix between highway and off road use. It gives a smooth, quiet ride and provides superior traction through both mud and snow.

For a substantial off road tire, the BF Goodrich Mud Terrain is the best tire on the market, IMHO.

The bset truck tire is the Michelin XPS traction. I did quit a bit of research and asked tire stores that sold many different brands of tires and the XPS traction was named as the best . 235-85-16 is about 32 inches tall and 9 inches wide. Will outlast any other light truck tire. Cost is high as you pay for what you get.

A bigger tire is not always going to give better traction. I had some older pickups with those skinny tires and they got around far better than my newer trucks do. As far as brands are concerned I have not had many that seemed good for all conditions. My latest truck I bought used and it has some sort of Michlen allseason on it (LTX)? not sure if thats the right letters but I can't seem to wear them out !good smooth ride on the highway. They are no good in the snow so I bought an extra set of rims and some Cooper Discoverer tires I run these in the winter they did good the first year but traction seemed to fade fast with some wear which is also fast and uneven. I won't buy another set of these. As far as traction goes I have ran some B.F.Goodrich Traction King and really like them but you will get some noise and they wear faster than some but I don't think much worse than the Coopers. So of the three I've mentioned above I'd recommend Michlen on road B.F. Goodrich off road and Cooper not at all. Every maker brings out new styles and types every year so maybe there are some real good all around tires I just haven't bought any yet.

I'm with you, those Michelin LTX tires are alomst indestructable. Came factory on my pickup, put 60,000 on them. Been on my goosenck since 2003 and still look great. Since then I've been through 5 sets of tires on the truck (getting about 30,000 miles to the set), got smart and put another set of Michelin LTX on it this summer.

Firestone -bridgestone makes a great touring tire for larger suv's and p-ups these would give you a quiet ride and handle towing and snow good .
