We'll try not to have a regular cross-country price check on this one if that's OK. What I'd like to know if there is much variation in prices between what we pay for regular vs premium gasoline at the pumps. Up here we always seem to pay 10 cents (Cdn) more per litre for premium which works out to about 31 US cents per US gallon. What is the situation where you live? Don't forget to tell us where you are.

In SE Nebraska, we usually have 89 (Ethanol blend) about 6 cents CHEAPER than 87. The 92 octane is about .08 higher than 87.

Was to IA for Old Threshers. In IA the 87 was cheaper than 89 too, thought it was about 10 cents. Crossed the border to WI and some of the same companies were 10 cents higher for 89. Same stickers on the pump 10% ethanol. Some of the small towns were up to $3.25. Drove further and it was $3.09 for 87. Taxes didn't do that fellows, I chalk it up to " oil elevation". lol

If your car or thuck does not require it your wasting your money premium burns slower , so you would be blowing unburn't gas out the tailpipe on a lo compression engine there for wasting money .

Alberta...

Do you have a vehicle that requires premium gas, or are you one of those guys that gives your vehicle a shot of premium once and a while as a "treat"?

I have a rule around here that no vehicles requiring premium are permitted!

It's amazing to me how much some people will pay for the perceived value of "premium" gasoline, only to put it in a vehicle that does not require it!

When I was out in Utah before labor day it seemed to be considerabally cheeper out there. I didn't realize that it was only 85 octane until I was almost there. Back in Wisconsin where I live the regular is 87. That would probably account for allot of the price difference. But we also pay different gas taxes in Wisonsin.

The reason for the difference in octane of "regular" gas is the elevation. The higher the elevation the easier the gas burns.

At sea level to about 2,000' you will see 87 octane as "regular". From 2,000' to 4,000' you will see 86 octane as "regular". Above 4,000 you will see 85 octane. Occasionally you will see 85.5 and 86.5 octane gas if they are between elevations.

I might not have my elevations perfect but that is basically what I see.

As for the price difference between premium and regular around here the "standard" difference is 10 cents between regular and plus and then another 10 cents more for premium. If you shop around you can find some stations that have a 7 cent difference between grades.

FWIW, Nathan

Most of the time there is a 10 cent spread from 87 to 89 octane and another 10 cents up to premium. I think the wholesaler cost differential is about 3 cents. I truck would probably cough and die if it ever got a drink of premium or 89. Here system couldn't handle it. Too rich for a country truck.

On average in our area (SE La.)..... ..... ....

The wholesaler cost differential from 87 and 89 is about .05 give or take .01 but the pump price is .10 more.

The wholesaler cost differential from 87 and 93 is about .15 give or take .01 but the pump price is .20 more.
