OT-S10 fuel problems

I have had trouble with my son's S10. The truck is finally running with a new fuel pump and relay. Problem is the fuel gauge doesn't work. It never shows completely full or less that 1/4 tank. The truck has a 13 gallon tank. All the parts houses only offer stuff for the 20 gallon tank. My question is this: Does anyone know if the sending unit (tele-gauge in GM language)from a 20 gal tank will fit and work in a 13 gal. tank. The truck is a 1989 with a 2.5 and 5 speed. Engine code is E.

Need to get this thing going so I can have my 1 ton back so I can go to tractor shows.

Thanks

Jerry

Did the fuel gauge work before you baftered the sender around while changing the fuel pump?

If it did work before the fuel pump change, you may have bent it, and/or the float may be dropping on the (mis-positioned) fuel pump sock as the fuel level drops.

If it was not working properly even before the fuel pump change, there could be a fuel tank grounding problem or a wiring problem, or an instrument panel problem.

The sender is easy to test with an ohmmeter. Ask a friendly Chevy shop forman what the resistance values should be, full and empty, and then verify your truck's actual readings. If the resistance readings at the sensor are way off, it's the sender, if the readings are close, you'll have to track down a grounding, wiring, or instrument panel problem.

If you do need a sender, and a new one is costly or tough to get, you should be able to find a good one at a southern wrecking yard, where road salt hasn't nearly eaten up the top of the fuel tank!

Bob - Thanks for the reply. Don't really know if the sending unit/gauge worked or not. Bought the truck with the head off. I tried to make sure the gauge worked when putting in the pump but never got it to read like I thought it should. It did work, sort of, but never showed clear full. I tried adjusting the float arm and such. Guess I should have figured as much. Still wondering if the stuff from a 20 gal tank will work. Or maybe I could swap a 20 gallon tank into the truck?

Thanks

Jerry

In the end a different tank will probably be cheaper.

I"d be more suprised it it DID work. My "91 has read 1/3 tank when full since it had 40,000 on it back in "93. "
The senders are the same- I swapped my 13 gallon tank for a 20 and the difference is length of the tank. My V8 swap and a 13 gallon tank did not go well together :)
