I can take this carb apart and put it back together in my sleep!!!! It's in a Case VAC that followed me home. I've worked many carbs over as I have 12 old tractors but this one buffalos me. It has a new kit but $3 gas leaks into the intake area when I shut it off. Runs great... New kit. Had to raise the float just a hair over the .25" called for to make it run. Sometimes I have to blow through the gas line into the intake to get it to take gas. Problem has to be in the intake needle area, I feel. Where have I gone wrong???

This just sounds too weird. You have to blow through the intake to get it to vaporize gas? Is there any chance the air filter is clogged? Don't the pistons draw a vaccuum and suck air though it?

Don, the problem most likely is that new VITON tipped needle valve. Most of these I have found to be junk. If the needle valve you took out is all steel, clean it up, inspect it, if it looks good put it back in along the seat.

While having the float level set to spec is a good idea, it's not as critical (within a 16TH of an inch or so) as some people think! Being off a little WILL NOT cause the carb to run over.

Start by verifying that the inlet valve seat is tightened TIGHT into the upper carburetor body, and a GOOD gasket is in place so no gas can get into the carburetor by leaking around the inlet valve seat's threads.

The fact you have trouble getting gas into the carburetor at times sounds like the float, or even the inlet needle itself, is jamming or binding.

Examine the inlet valve needle for any "burrs" or roughness that could cause it to jamb in the bore of the seat, and not close tightly.

Verify the float is not leaky and "gas logged".

Then, set the float level to spec.

Eyeball that the float pontoons are not bent, and that they are centered in the float bowl. Look for any evidence of contact between the float and the float bowl... if the tractor has been run a while, vibration will cause shiney wear spots any place on the float where it touches the float bowl.

Bend the float, as needed, to eliminate any contact or binding.

Many of us tractor nuts agree, though, it is always a good idea to shut off the gas when the tractor is parked for the day. Even a carb in the best of shape may, out of the blue, "run over", if a flake of crud gets in the needle and seat area.

Aloha, I don't know anything about that carb but maybe I can still help. If you have to blow into the line to make it work, (did you check for a clogged line?) I would assume that the needle valve is working as it should but the float could be maladjusted. Actually, if the bowl was full, you wouldn't be able to blow any fuel into the carb.I think by adjusting the float 1/4" to make it work doesn't seem right. Did you adjust the float with the gauge according to spec?? When it ran, was it running rich (black smoke)? Does it idle ok? What about high speed? I think that the problem may be with the low speed fuel system. I would adjust the float again and examine the low speed fuel system again.
