If one were looking to buy an older workhorse (bout 120-140HP) are there any advantages to either John Deere or IH? Parts availability, etc.. I like either "colors" about the same.
Don't make much difference if it's a good worker and can get parts.

which is closer to you? and IH dealer or a John deere dealer? That would play big in my Decision. becasue most parts are still avalible from both side in that range I do believe

I used to own a JD 4440 and a IHC 1486. The 1486 cost less than half to purchase compared to the 4440. The 4440 was a much better tractor to use as far as comfort and location of hydraulic or transmission controls. I spent very little repairing either one. If I was going to spend a lot of hours in one I would buy the JD. For more limited use the IHC is also a good choice if it will save you some money on the purchase price.

I agree, a good dealer and readily available parts and service should be the deciding factor. After that everything else is a toss-up.

I'd hate to buy many, if any new parts for a tractor that big. Got any used tractor salvage places near by ? See what they have a supply of.

I've got both Red and Green dealers close by - don't know about salvage yards I'll have to do some looking. Sounds like both have a pretty good track record.
