My son has a small go-cart. I have been working on it for several hours over the last couple of months. He's starting to relize that I don't know what I'm doing. I need help.

Problem:
Engine starts no problem. Runs up on block forever, no problem (shake it still no problem). Put it on the ground runs about 30 sec and stops running. It a 5 horse power Briggs and stratton.

I have gone over the engine several time not finding anything. Any ideas would bring a smile from ear to ear on his face and mine.

Thanks

I'll bet "old" is on the right track. Does it have a tether cord or toggle kill switch or just a piece of steel band you hold press on the plug end to stop it? Anyway it sounds like something is grounding out on it's own due to vibration or sommething the driver is moving or sitting on (those engines sometimes came equiped with multiple ignition shut-off points). The other suggestions shouldn't be discounted but your problem sounds too cosistant to be fuel or ignition component failure.

Good luck and have fun!

pperry, you might want to shop around a little for your parts. For $20 I picked up a kit (points, condensor, plunger and flywheel key) a complete gasket kit and a connecting rod.

Friendly advice,

Ok, time for me to guess:

Is that one of those briggs with a pulse pump on the carb? If it is then when you are riding on it the throttle is further open for a given engine speed than it would be when the engine is running unloaded or sitting on stands. When running with the throttle opened further the pulse pump is less effective and can not keep up with the fuel demand.

Try replacing the pulse pump diaphragm on the side of the carb and see if that works. You can buy them for a couple of bucks at any of the big box stores or any mower shop. It is a part that is very prone to fatigue and deterioration. That would be my guess.....

The go-cart does not die just putting it on the ground. It dies about 30 to 40 yards. He's very carefull about not giving it to much gas. He also doesn't adjust the gas to quick. I have not checked the flywheel key yet. I have put it under load on the ground. It only dies when moving. I've driven it so it must not be a load issue.

will it fire right back up after it dies,or does it need to sit for awhile?? I"m no B&S guru for sure, but it does sound like a fuel issue of some sort..try loosening the gas cap and running, the vent might be clogged??

I had a 5 hp briggs on a lawnmower that would run very well untill you put the lawnmower in gear then it would spudder and die, tore it down checked everything couldn't find anything wrong. Called briggs they didn't have any ideas said they would send a man over, an hour later briggs called back and asked if the sparkplug boot was close to the metal on the plug. It was, he said to cut part of the boot off. Solved the problem, briggs had got some boots that was high in carbon and they would short out.

Just a guess, but could the problem be in the clutch? Most gocarts run a centrifugal clutch setup. If it runs with the wheels off the ground, could there be enough drag in the clutch to stall it on the ground without actually moving the cart?
Like I said, just a guess. Later Brokenwrench

You didn;t say if it stops just sitting on the ground or if your son starts to ride it. Does it have a load on the engine when it dies or is it still just idling? If it is just sitting and idling then dies, look for a way that level or pressure from the blocks are affecting fuel flow.

check the flywheel key that it isn't sheared. If it was and still started, the rope would kick back. But check it.

You never gave much info on what type of 5hp briggs it is. If it has points it can be the fiber little push rod that opens the points. When it just starts to get alittle warm it will sease up and stick the points open and die. If it has points replace this pushrod.Or it could be the condensor. Does it have Blue spark? Other than that i would need more info on the motor as to what type of carb it has and is it electronic ignition.Keep us posted.
