OT-Kohler Engine overhaul

I purchased a used Vermeer stump grinder (model SC 252 manufactured in Aug '03) that has a 25hp Command Pro gasoline engine. The engine has a small amount of smoke coming from the exhaust, which probably means that it needs new valve stem seals and/or a ring job. I called the local Vermeer dealer and after explaining the situation, he told me that this engine is a "throw-away" engine and that it would cost me about 2/3 as much to overhaul the engine as it would to purchase a new engine (new engine costs $1700)and that a new engine provides a 2-year warranty. How I'm thinking I been given a sales job to buy a new engine.
My Question: I don't believe that this engine can't be repaired cheaper than that especially if I do the disassembly/assembly work myself. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge on Kohler engines in general and on their ease of overhaul?
Thanks in advance. - Ron

Kohler makes some good engines, but they have made junk engines also. The KT17 HP engine was the first junk Kohler engine I was ever ripped off on {twice}. But I don't know of any Kohler that can't be rebuilt. There are guys on ebay that sell overhaul kits, some kits will have new pistons. there are also Kohler engines on ebay. watched a 22 horse, still in the crate go for around $700 tuesday. And then someone will have a used up 22-25 horse that will bring 1000 dollars. But if you watch ebay, you will find a new 22-27 horse for much less than $1700.

I can only tell you what I have found out about one we have that I need to fix. The complete kit for the engine, 14HP was quoted at $130 whcih is a long ways from what a new engine would cost.
