Always wanted a Ford F-250 4X4 Super-cab short-box Diesel pickup. Automatic transmission--3.73 gears. Finally after 3 years of looking for a low mileage used one, I found one. 2004 XLT with 5,500 miles. Just about as perfect a used truck you could buy. Has $1,000 worth of chrome, spray in bedliner, and billet grill. $30,000 is what it cost me. FX-4 option--pretty much loaded. Do you think it was a good buy? {I do}. Anyway what can I REALLY expect for fuel mileage?

Mike m was right. the only thing I can add is,The first liar does'nt have a chance.Any of these guys that tell you they are getting 18+ towing a trailer are either doing it down hill or LIEING.P.S. I do own a diesel and I love it but realistically look for 14-20 depending on empty or loaded, you will love the tourque at road speed.Happy hauling.

I have a 1997 F-250 turbo-diesel 4x4 extended cab with auto and 4.11 gears. I get 15 mpg when driving to town and in town. On the rare occasion when I get over to I-5 and can crank it up to 70, I get 20 mpg. Over 70, it drops back down to 15. Of course, this is for a 7.3 liter engine and you have the 6 liter, so your mileage may vary.

If YOUR happy with what YOU paid what else matters !!!! You will also get MPG stories from 10 up to 30 mpg so just drive yours and figure it and see where it is. I suspect that unless your pulling really heavy loads alot your not going to see much savings over a gasser.

I have a 2004 F250 SD Lariat crewcab FX4 diesel bought new, now with ~25,000 miles. I have checked almost every tank full and get 16.5 - 17 mpg. That is about 60% highway/40% city. That is using the odometer reading and a calculator. The on-board computer always says I am getting about 17.5. It lies. I have to admit that I don't drive for optimum fuel mileage.

My brother has a f-250 4wd diesel with a little less than 100,000 miles on it. Last year, at the advice of my cousin who is a caterpillar heavy equip mechanic, bought one of those computer handsets you plug into the onboard computer. He reprogramed the onboard computer for more horsepower etc... He claims the mileage went from about 17 on the hwy to 24. I cannot attest to that, but I drove it a couple of times after and it definitely did have more horsepower. Before it seemed sort of sluggish and after he reprogramed it, it accelerated more like a gasoline eng. The only drawback from what my cousin told is that it can be a little harder on the clutch.

Bryce has a handle on this. Those re-programmers also adjust the odometer to read high and make the mileage appear to increase. Most of these wonderful claims of mileage occur while remembering what the level road mpg reading on the dash was. That's after a few beers at the local watering hole too.

Now now.... I agree with what you said, in many cases. This may be one. But I'm sure you know that on many of these new engines, they can dial up the boost pressure, along with the fuel delivery very easily. It wouldn't surprise me if somebody got a little better mileage doing this. However, I don't think that could be done on an old powerstroke. At least not until they came out with the HEUI. FWIW,

Rod

Rim:

I've told this more than once on here so bear with me if you've heard it. I bought a 93 f250 long box supercab, 5 speed, 7.3 turbo 14mpg. Ithad a bad clutch when I bought it. I borrowed a 95 f250 supercab longbox and a 20ft trailer to get it. 340m round trip 170m with the 95 pulling my 93 on the trailer. Both trucks with 4.10 gears. Mileage for the 95 round trip...17mpg That is actual. I filled the tank at both ends. Nothing unusual about the day. I would expect 16 to 19 out of yours.

If anyone has any 3.73 or better 3.55 gear sets for my 4x4 please let me know.

Rob

I have a 99 F-350 Superduty auto with long box with 3.73 gears and turbo. 2 wheel drive. Check speedo with expressway mile markers and keep track of every fill. Averages 17 with about 50-50 trailer and empty. Dodge half ton gaser was 13.
