Hi guys, I need your opinions on some good careers. I am currantly unemployed and looking for a job but I would rather find a good career that pays well. I am mechanically inclined and enjoy working on things. Old garden tractors are my hobby and I enjoy fixing them. I also enjoy traveling and have considered entering the trucking industry. Doing this though would require training for a CDL. I have checked in to a few trucking companies that offer their own paid training but would require being away from home for 3-4 weeks. Does anybody on here drive for a living? Pros - Cons? The main company I was looking at is called Roehl trucking. Anybody have any experiance with them? I greatly appericiate all your opinions and time. Thanks for helping a young feller out. Mike.

Are you serious, listen to mike brown, he's right. My son went into the Navy as a dental assistant for 6 years but must progress through school as his time goes by. Now when he gets out he only needs 3 years college to be a dentist. there are a lot of military jobs and also gov't civi's jobs like Post Office all going to computers and so much out there , you need to get out of the box (not insulting you) and go explore. Education Study money.

Going into the service is a good idea. You may not always enjoy where you are, but for a few years you can deal with it. Why? Because if you use your head you can come out with a good chunk of money, (if you don't blow it "having a good time" while you are in) and a good education. And some life experience which will help you to know what you want to do, and maybe where. The money you save while in can get you into a house, or start a business, or give you a good start for retirement, whatever, but it is hard to save as much, AND learn a job on the outside.

Hi Mike,

Can't speak directly to driving, but I will tell you to get an education. Not necessarily a college education, but an education in a specific field that will allow you to earn a good living. Tech Schools offer many good options. Truck driving may be right for you. Perhaps plumbing, electrical, HVAC, welding, the list is endless. Pick a direction in life and go for it. If you are drifting, the military is a good place to start out.

MIKE,Being a young guy you must look into the future to see what you would like to be doing in the next 30 to 40 years.My advice to you is work smart not hard.Go to school,maybe not collage but a tech school-you don"t have to go that long and you come out making good money right away.Most of the time the school will have placement before you finish.I would recamend motorcycle,boat,small engine school with a smattering of machining thrown in.That way you could get some expierence and then maybe open your own shop working on mowers which could lead to a dealership selling too.My advice about truck driving-DO NOT DO IT-unless you plan on never having a family.My dad drove over the road for most of my childhood and I only saw him on the weekends and that was mostly on the couch sleeping.He would never consider driving OTR an option for me.Young and dumb as I was I started driving for a lumber co.Looking back on it it sucked,but it did land me to where I am today-estimating interior millwork for new homes.Thats just my opinion but keep us posted on what you decide.lol DitchWI

Mike, I am almost 64 years old, 9 years ago I got a class A CDL. Having been a farmer most of my life helped, I drove a truck some in the National Guard in the early 60's. As a farmer of course I had pulled a gooseneck trailer quite a bit. A friend of mine had a Dump Truck with a heavy dove tail trailer I took my test in it took two trips because I flunked the pretrip the first time. The problem is there getting a job with no experance. I finaly got on at an ICE Co delivering ice for three months, driving both straight and 18 wheelers. The next problem is though I have been driving a straight truck for the last 8 years delivering auto parts, most truck co's will not hire me even now because I do not have 2 years over the road exp. The problem with the co that offer free training it is not free you will be their slave for 1 to 2 years, and many of them do not give you enought training to be a good driver. The best deal is if you have a comunity collage that offers a truck driving course, there are over the road co's that will put you with a trainer after you graduate, and you will not be a slave. Stay away from the co's that want to train you and make you an owner operator, all you will be is a lease operator, and in many cases at the end of the lease come up holding the bag. Just my 2 cents.

Mike;
You sound like a young man so I'm going to give you the same advice I scoffed at thirty-five years ago to my regret.
Get more education.
Get more education.
Get more education.
As you get older you can't work harder only smarter.
I served two years in the Army and as much as I disliked it at the time I have to admit that it taught me some life lessons that have served me well such as mental toughness and perserverance.
If I had it to do over I would have joined the Air Force and let them theach me to work on high tech cool stuff like jet engines or airframes since I too am mechanicaly inclined. There are a lot of training opportunities in the service. The news makes it sound like everybody is getting shot at but it isn't the case.

You mentioned you enjoy traveling but don't want to be away from home 3 to 4 weeks. Are you sure you want to be in the trucking industry? Have you ever considered the postal service? As I understand it, you start off part time and work your way to full time. It generally pays pretty well and offers something many other companies don't; a retirement plan and health insurance.

Mike, you could check with some lumberyards, see if they could train you to get your CDL. Just as soon as I turn 21, the lumber company I work for will help me get my Class B CDL. They have gotten quite a few drivers their CDLs. Hopefully, others will have some other ideas for you. Good luck on your search.
