I think there have been a few discussions on these trucks before and I thought they were unavailable via surplus as they do not meet DOT requirements and are crushed but I just saw my first one up close at an auto rally.

I should of quizzed the owner more but he just said they are available via surplus. I did not see his license plate, so he may of had a repair plate on it....?

Anyone have any more info ?
Bill

as far as i know they are sold as "unusable for liability issues. but most are very much usuble the jsut do something stupid such as disconnect batteries, relay for starter something liek that so its rendered as "unusable" you plug the relay in drive it through a ditch flip it over you cant hold them liable. i have bought equipment as "unusable such as recently a plate compactor they showed me it ran ran fine then pulled the spark plug out of it sold it to me as "unusable but it bought normal price because i knew it ran atnd worked jsut let them off the hood. it didnt run work when they sold it if i put a plug in or run it and the rod flys out the block and kills me i cant blame them.

This is my understanding, not saying it's complete or correct.

The Humvee is classified as a weapon due to the way it was designed and it procured. Weapons are not sold surplus, therefore are rendered "unuable" before leaving as scrap. Typically, tank drives over them or a weight is dropped on them.

However, there are some surplus Humvee's out there, at one time a lot got out through a loophole allowing trading assets, allowing the military base comanders to trade unused Humvee's to local contractors for work on their bases. Loophole has since been closed.

Again, not sure, but that's what I had heard.

As far as license, if it meets safety requirements, you can get a tag, just pay your money, get the inspection, jump through the hoops...goes for Humvee's or homebuilt cars.

Bill, here in Virginia there"s no problem.

I use a deuce-and-a-half for a pickup. Bought it from a dealer in NC about 6 yrs ago. Showed up at DMV with the title and the only question was standard or farm plates. Then I had to get an annual safety inspection, which isn"t much here. Lights, horn, brakes, tires, wipers. The lack of muffler has never been a problem. That air horn sure wakes up everybody in the garage.

Any surplus military vehicle would be the same.

My mom works at the Hummer factories where they make the Humvee's or H1's and the H2's. And my step dad is a trainer at the Chippewa Testing Facility. The H1's for military use are plain jane and made to whatever specs specified in the gov't order. The H1's for commercial use have razzled up interiors for operator comfort but are identical to the military H1's with the exception of the armor and other military like items and without the camoflauge paint scheme. Also the commercial H1's are now available with the 6.6K Duramax Diesel as opposed to the 6.5L. As far as I know you may be able to get a surplus military humvee but all the fun goodies are taken off or rendered unusable, I mean who wants some crazy to get their hands on a serious off-road vehicle with a huge gun on top of it, not me. So either you saw a surplus humvee or a commercial painted like a military vehicle.

The guy said it was surplus. Definetly not a H1. I have seen one or two of those around town. Very spartan interior, seats were a simple cushion, he removed all 4 doors while he set up.

No M60 either. :-(

I wish I had looked at his plate or asked more questions. Today's was the last rally for the year.

I am a memeber of MVPA, Military Vehicle Preservation Association, and the information I have read is that HUMVV's are available as surplus, but only for offroad use. A couple of years ago a bunch of them were sold at auction in Georgia. You can do a google on MVPA and also Military Vehicle Magazine and get more info. HTH I also have tractors too. Best of both worlds for me!

Licensing of vehicles is mainly a state concern. If a state motor vehicle dept gets some money, you can probably get some kind of license plate- collector, antique, farm, whatever oddball personal plate the state collect money for. Vehicle inspections may be intersted in pollution equipment, basic safety, VIN numbers to show its not stolen. Surplus Hummer -not current civilian H2- might get a collector plate good for daylight only-no interstate highway travel. Another way is a dealer plate for multiple vehicle use as a demo- add a proof of insurance card to the paid for state license and you can drive a wierd vehicle around town. Previous posting about Unimog in Nebraska(?) noted that they were classified as agriculteral equipment- no plate required. Need to check whatever license plate/state the hummer had- could have homebuilt/remanufactered/special purpose exemption issued. Depends how much money the state wants to issue a license for the road. RN

Here in ILL they put plates on them and drive them all time everything from 1/4 tons to tank retievers ,and once in a while you see a tank barreling down the interstate going to a parade .

Ill maybe S.O.S. secratary of state title/license plated. Issued by secratary of state (dot) office after checking numbers for theft reports, basic brakes, lights, etc at time of manufacture. Know of one issued dated 1971 for a 1931 VL. Couple surplus jeeps also given later dated titles/plates of time of civilian ownership- had to watch out when looking up parts. Also ex munincipal jeep with 5+ year newer title than manufacture date. Illinois wasn't too picky about pollution equipment at the time -1970s, main parts numbers were tracable-not stolen, vehicle wasn't obviously unsafe, you paid your money and you could get title and some kind of license plate..

Can you imagine what happened to the '1971 Harley' SOS title and tag that was issued to the 1931 VL?
