Hi,
I'm looking for a pair of 6.00-24 innertubes for a tractor I'm building. I have a pair of tires and rims. The rims were painted red and mounted like a Farmall Cub rear wheels do. They could have been for a Cub except I didn't think that 600 tires were used on one. Could they have been for an implement of some kind? Anyway, I need tubes. I was told that 8.30-24 tubes would fold, crack, and leak after a year or two. Any ideas as to where to look for them?
Thanks
Ron

Is there a reason why they can't be mounted tubeless? No idea on where you'd get tubes.

Hi Rod,
Well, Yes there is a couple reasons.
1. The tires are old used ones and I doubt if they would ever seal even with a sealer of sort.
2. The rims are not solid. I took the old solid rim and drilled and installed 20, 1/2" spokes in each. They are welded into the rim but I'm sure they arn't air tight welds. It was suggested puting Slime in and it just might work. It may come to this. If I can't find tubes I guess I'll have to try it.
Thanks
Ron

Hi Ron,
Ye just had to come up with a reason huh? I know where you're coming from though. I had an old 18" combine tire here a few weeks ago. Tire was bad, and all the neighbours could get was tube type tire. The original was tubeless. They were having a fit trying to get a tube for it. I suggested just putting the valve stem back in, and mount it tubeless. When push came to shove, that had to be done, and it's working fine.
Don't know how well the slime can seal up the old tires. I guess it's worth a shot. As far as the rims go, I would first mount the tires dry, and then take some soapy water and check each spoke for leaks. Mark the leaky ones, and then dismount and go back with the welder and make them air tight. That part won't be too hard. The tires.... well that's another story, and you know what you're up against. Best of luck.

Rod

Hi Kent,
Well it was Miller tire that told me there was no 6.00-24 tires or tubes. Well I got two tires and they arn't tubless. They also said that if I use a 8.3-24 tube it will crease and after a couple years leak. Someone must make them or at least did. Thanks for the help.

I did a quick check and it does seem that that size is no longer made although the ones I saw were combinations of 7.5/8.3/9.5-24. Experience has taught me that you probably could get by with the over size tubes if you do it right. When the first bead is on the rim I put the tube, before inflation (don't laugh I have seen tire men put air in the tube before they stuff it in the tire, seems like extra work to me.) and get the valve stem in place. Then I inflate the tube until it has taken it's shape and there are no creases or wrinkles in it. Then I put the second bead of the tire on the rim as the tube deflates. If the tube has no wrinkles when you put the second bead on then it will have no wrinkles when you inflate it in the tire. As for Millers, I would tell you it wouldn't work either if I were selling you the tube, comebacks are killers.
