Whats a buck saw worth?

Hey guys, I recently picked up an old buck saw. Its in 100% original and working condition. All of the original square hardware is still there. The hopper still pivots freely. It is a stationary saw, you can either bolt or stake it down and its run by PTO with the long wide belts. It was manufactured by sears and roebuck. I dont have the date off the top of my head but it still has the ID tag to get serial #'s off of. With it came a used blade and a brand new blade that has never been used and it hardly has any surface rust on it. It also came with 3 belts, one of them also brand new. One other thing it came with is i believe the guy said it was used for truing or sharpening the blade, i forget but its basically a long flat piece of steel with one end rounded off slightly to get the correct angle. If anybody could help me out with what this saw is worth i would greatly appreciate it. I have been told that the blades are very hard to come by. Is this true? Again i greatly appreciate any replies and help that you give. Thanks
Kyle Stewart

Those cord wood saws are great if you like extra lifting, slow cutting, burning much more fuel than you need to , and living dangerously. A good chain saw and properly constructed saw buck works faster, easier, safer.

That"s why cord wood saw aren"t worth much.

About a sawbuck. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Seriously, I've seen them go at auction for a few bucks to a hundred fifty dollars. Depends on the condition and whether anybody wants it very bad.
Kind of a limited market for them, I think.

What you are describing here is a BUZZ saw, not a BUCK saw. I have one Dad bought new from Sears. Here a buck saw is a hand powered wood frame saw that you use to cut the wood laying on the ground or a stand and is pushed and pulled by hand and has a blade about 1 1/2" x 2'

can be carried up into that tree to cut the limbs off 20' up in the air in top of tree and you cannot do that with a BUZZ saw

I'll bet it will go up in value with the high price of fuel oil and LP.

I paid $17.50 for one at an auction about 10 years back. I replaced all the wood, replaced the babbitt bearings with pillow blocks, then resold the rebuilt unit at my own auction for $50. I had more than that in the pillow block bearings.

Thats one of them have to find the right person to sell it. I've seen them go at auctions for $1 up to $500 so its just finding the person that wants one and all

Maybe a dollar? OK....bad joke. I have no idea what it is worth but have recently taken an interest in belt driven equipment. Can you post a picture of it?

It's kinda like cows, the buck saw is not worth quite as much as the doe saw if you can find one of them, but either one is awful hard to clean. Seriously a lot of people use the old saw blades to paint pictures on and stuff. Those things have always scared the bejesus out of me. Can you imagine the slice that would make if that 80 some year old blade would happen to crack right at the bolt hole and split in two? You'd starve to death waiting for it to hit the ground, if it didn't go through you first, as that's where you stand, right in front of the darned thing. Be careful, Harley

I don"t know how it happened, but when I was a little kid, my Grandfather got his arm mangled with a buzz saw. He was in the hospital many months, and his arm was only about 1/2 as big as the other one, and did not have any strength in it. I guess he was lucky to even save it. I always have had a healthy respect for them

What it's worth is what someone will pay for it. I agree they seem dangerous. For one thing you're always working with crooked heavy branches that can bind on the blade. Thirty or more years ago my dad decided he wanted one for his Fergy 30. Somewhere he knew where there was a factory made one and he copied and built one just like it. We used to use it quite a bit. He told me about some hapless soul who had a buzz saw and knew the blade was cracked but used it anyhow. The blade let go and killed him instantly (won't go into details). Dad did a good job of building a guard that surrounded the blade except the cutting area. In recent times I've been thinking- wouldn't it be kinda fun to have a smaller version for a garden tractor and do lighter branches?

I"ve sawn firewood with one of these for over 30 years, and you never stand in front of the blade, you"re always off to the put on side. The guy doing the take off likewise keeps out of line with the saw. I inspect the blades thoroughly for cracks every year, if they show up, then it gets nice picture of a cow and barn painted on it. In the condition stated, would say its should be worth $150.00.
