i have the chance to buy a 4020 lp tractor with clutch fork broken, tractor runs good, has 3 point and top link, wide frontend, power steering, flatop fenders, 4999 hours, could use a paint job, and needs back tires, it has single remote hydr. i believe it is a 1964 model, is 1,000 to much to give to fix it up? thanks in advance.

i, Start at $1000 and go up from there! Have $1000 in hundred dollar bills, and pull it out and ask if he would part with it.If he takes it great if not find that point where it will work.
Go visit with your local JD dealership and price what a clutch job will be. This tractor will have to be split to fix. i will bet that they will want +or- $1500 to do this. so I would say that in the neighbor hood of $3000 or so it tops.
The tractor will need about $1000 in rear tires. That is a current price of putting a set of 18.4x38s on a cousins 4230 a month ago.
While you have it in the shop get a second remote added for you will need one sooner or later.
Remember an LP tractor is a Gas rig with just a different fuel and delivery system. nothing to be scared of.
Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Serial number check to make certain. With the price of gasoline and diesel it's not impossible that somebody with an old LP tractor might be laughing. A side console 1969 or later LP is a rare bird. Even more so if equiped with PS or front wheel assist. Every now and again some "genious" takes one of these rare collector'$ tractor$ and jams a diesel combine engine in it??? Something like the guy who was stripping parts off a 330 to repair his M. We also ran across somebody here that had a gas 4230 and he wanted to convert it to diesel!!!. Then there was somebody here who knows of a gasoline engine stripped out of a high crop 4020. Imagine what that would have been worth if some hack hadn't chopped it up.

$1,000 sounds cheap, the parts are worth much more than that if they are in good condition. Do you think the 4020 gas and LP's will eventually increase in value like the 4020 diesels have? There was a time that no one wanted a propane two cylinder either because they were an oddball. Now they are rare and collectible.

The wide front alone is worth a thousand dollars.
