We are looking to build a couple of grain bins in the next year or so. One at first, the second later on. Would primarily be used for corn storage, so we can increase our beef cattle operation. Right now we have a large corn crib and i shovel a lot of corn each week, and im just about tired of it. So what i would like to know, is who makes good bins, approximate cost, Dryers? Drying Bins? I am thinking that they would both be about 10 to 12000 bushel. Is it worth it to let someone else put the bin up for me? All replies appreciated!

hang on to your wallet for new. Several makes out there and all have different grade etc. I like Conrads bins, drying floors like the shivers units. You talked about doing it yourself, have you done anything like it in the past. You will need to pour cement pad, with a footing those float pads will be fullof rats and broke up in few years. Personally I would go for used unit if can fined one close and are willing trto do most labor yourself otherwise just go with new and pay. example 36ft bin with full floor eight rings tall and in excellent condition I bought for $700.00. new you will be talking well over 15000.00 just for the bin, floors will run over 2000.00 etc. Let me know or give me a ring as I have set of bin jacks for sale, also have cement forms I made for pouring cement pads etc. Can give you alot of tips to look out for as have done alot of units past few years but quit doing the bin moving business due to lack of good help,Ins rates etc. As far as augers in the bin etc I wouldn't install any just the tube and use a vac, once you do that you won't go back. Give me a ring 319-257-6764 and where are you located. Come look if close I can also give you some prices on new bins and I know where some used are that they are wanting to sell.

Are the jacks still for sale and how many do you have? I am located in Northeast Iowa.

No; they are gone. Was a set on auction last weekend was told but other thanthat I don't have any currently for sale. I do however have cement forms I made for using when doing grain bin floors I would sell. I quit that sideline work.

Rick, what are your bin jacks like and where are you located? I see you have an eastern Iowa phone number, I'm down by Fairfield and might be interested in your jacks.

they are the tall units,2 legged style with long anchor leg. Winches all worked fine when last used but probably need some lube now since been over year since used now. All are on trailer for moving to different sites 12 total. You don't carry these by yourself period, two guys yes, three even better. they are actually owned also by another party let me know if seriuos and we will let you now a price. The other party has hyd jacks now since the bin size normally sold has went to alot of 48ft and larger. theres enough jacks to do 36ft,although unlike some guys I do not skip seams with jacks, each seam get s a jack way simpler going up and down. My dad and I have put up 4 bins in the last few years. 3 used, and one new Sukup. All went about the same. You need a set of bin jacks if your gonna do it yourself. They go up pretty easily once you catch on to how the fit together. Whatever you do, get a full floor. If you go to the Sukup web page you can surf around and see what I mean. If you ever plan on drying in it, you need the air tubes they sell that go along the bin wall. If you plan on doing it yourself, make sure to check the weather for about 5 days out. Took dad and I a day to get the top ring and most of the roof together, then figure 3 rings a day. It could be done faster, though. Full floor lets you put an unload in it. If you run a Sukup unload, 8" is plenty. We've got a 10" in one and a 10" Westfield auger can't keep up. Cost, I'm not sure, figure $150 a bushel, I'd guess. Any other questions, feel free to e-mail me. Be glad to help.

we've built bins and had them built for over 40yrs.. we let the pro's do it now.

we have several companies of bins

Silver Shield-- clayton lambert and co. ( no longer available but great bin)

Brock (brock and Butler) we like these and are our 2nd favorite

Circle--- ok (dont know if still around)
Superior--- out of business and for good reason!

and verius mfg's of GOV surplus bins

we use over 15 different bins in a season..

we dont ahve the tubes along anywalls and still dry in them--- we use a lot of air drying anymore

axel and centrifical type fans

we have a love hate relationship with stirators...
the answer will depend on the day--- so dont ask.
