Woods 6' HD Rotary Cutter, how much HP is needed..

Here's the scoop, I recently moved to the county with approx 20 acres (woods with trails and some yard). Anyhow, after looking at compact tractors I decided that an older farm/utility around 40-50 hp with a loader is what would work out best for me.

Recently I was at an auction and I bought a used Woods 7200 HD bush hog made in 99 for $250. It was used by a city for mowing lots and such, the sides are bowed out but the deck, clutch and gearbox seem to be in good shape. I figure that even if the mower is too big for what I need I can always get my money out of it.

So here is my question, the Woods web page says that 50 to 150 hp is required to run the mower (it weighs 1300 pounds). So what happens if I try and run it with a 40 hp tractor? It's not like I'm going to be taking out 4" trees? Mainly just mowing the trails and such in the woods and along the road.

The weight is probably the biggest reason that Woods specifies 50-150 horsepower tractor. It certainly doesn't take 50 HP minimim to cut with a 6 foot mower. But it does take a tractor with a Cat II three point hitch and heavy operating weight to keep the front wheels on the ground when you're using a 1300 lb mower.

I have a woods 6 ft. It weighs around 850 lbs. I have it mounted on a MF 203 which is a industral tractor, and is a little heaver than the farm tractor. It has the standard perkins 3 cyl diesel with arond 35 hp. This hp is enough to pull my mower in some very thick stuff. The only problem you may have with a smaller tractor like this is keeping the front end on the ground. My MF 203 front end stays on the ground, but when I put it on my MF 231, which is a farm type tractor, the front end is a little light. You may need a heaver tractor with that heavy of a mower. Stan

Some of the reason it's rated 50 hp min.is so you will use it with a "heavier" tractor. Some of it also is, so you can set the clutch light enough for a smaller tractor.

I wouldn't want it on any tractor that's under 45 "decent" PTO hp, and i wouldn't want it on a light duty tractor either....
