Good Starter Tractor?

I'm a newbee to antique tractors. I have been going to shows for a couple of years now, and just love to look at them and be around them. You know the feeling. I have decided to settle my mid life urges by buying a tractor, and would like some input about what would be a good tractor to start with.

I am looking for something that won't set me back a ton to purchase, parts readily available, easy to work on, etc. In other words nothing too expensive or delicate. I also want to occasionally use the tractor for light work such as cultivating and rough mowing.

From the looking that I've done, M tractors are readily available, especially Farmall's, and I really like the looks of them (late 40's & early 50's). Is the Farmall M a good tractor to meet the needs I mentioned above, or is there a better option out there? What should I look for? What should I stay away from?

Any help you can give me is very much appreciated. Thanks.

Joe

IF you are going to be doing any hauling of the tractor consider what you have to pull a trailer with and if you have a trailer or not how heavy a truck and trailer you are willing to get. For a tractor the size of Farmall M you need at least a 3/4 ton truck with a trailer with at least 2 3500# axles and that is with absoutlay no added weight to tractor, that size trailer would be good for a farmall H with a full size 1/2 ton truck

Joe,

I have had a 1952 Ford 8N with the Sherman two speed for about 13 years and it does most of what I need on my about 7 acres. It will plow, disc and will even pull a 48 blade 3 pt. tiller in low range. It bush hogs good but you need an over riding clutch.

Recently I bought another Ford, a 1962 801 Powermaster 861 Diesel. It"s about twice the tractor as the 8N and the diesel is a sipper. I got it in good running condition for $3000.00 and now the little 8N wonders why I don"t use it as much. But I"m keeping both as I now have a 15KW PTO generator for the 861 and I keep a blade on the 8N. 3 point hitch and live PTO are great.

I have a Super C, Super H and Super M and love them all. You wouldn't go wrong with a C, H or M. My Super C is the most versatile by a hundred miles. If you are looking at more than red, consider a JD B or a Ford N. Love my JD B and Ford 2N, too. The 2N is the most versatile of any of them.

Well. You're gonna be in GOOD company when you do decide to settle on one. The neatest folks there are frequent these boards. I have LOTS of Fords, a JD 2cyl, an Avery A and my overall favorite for utility work around the place is the Jubilee. You might try looking into the Ford 'hundreds'. Live PTO would make my wants complete. BTW, I'll have ME a nice Farmall M or Super someday. I also got my eye on a nest of little red Case's with the round nose. Don't know much about them yet 'cept they are available and reasonable too.

I have plowed corn and mowed hay with three Farmalls back in the '40s & '50s.....
Here is my thoughts:
----- ---- Cultivating ----- Mowing hay
Farmall C - too light ----- excelent
Farmall H - very good ----- excelent
Farmall M - very good ----- excelent

The M is a little big for the job.but it stays where you put it... The H easy to handle and can handle both jobs with ease ---(MY CHOICE)--- The C hard to hold in the row ,at high speed its a fight, mowing not to bad but a little light.

I enjoyed all three of them..I have a '46H, restored and a '51M, Iam working on..

A number of tractors come to mind. All can be had for not to much and parts aren't hard to find either. Farmall H or M, JD A or B, Oliver 77 or 88 just to give you a couple. Also Allis WD or Ford 801 etc but the ford do get a little pricey

You couldnīt go wrong with a Super C or 200 with fast hitch if you are looking for a Farmall.

Sounds like you're looking for a Farmall M or maybe an H. A Super C might fit right in.

Farmall Ms are every where and are good tractors. I saw a nice one with a loader sell for $1800 last weekend. Parts are easy to find, and they are simple to work on The only draw back would be lack of a 3 point hitch.

Ford N series tractors are also every where. Every part imaginable is available for them. Again they are easy to work on. They have 3 point hitches. They are on the light side for doing any serious work, but would fit the needs you described very well. The only draw back would be no live power, but I don't think the M does either. Once the bug bites there is no cure(lol)
