I know about the state regulations for farm use specific tags/license plates, but i am wondering if there is a place where i can purchase the license plate that states FARM USE in red lettering or does anyone have a way of making one - size/dimensions, colors, mounting brackets. I am going to be using it on a flat bed trailer for hauling stuff from my new farm to dump and to pick up items for the farm from southern states and what not.

Ryan, It would serve you best to check with the DMV or your State DOT to find out just what stipulations exist in your state as to the use of Farm vehicke tags. The law varies from state to state. In Michigan, for example, Farm tags are to be used only for transporting farm products or equipment within the state, or within 150 miles of the farm from which the vehicle is registered. Due to a quirk in the law, I am in violation by driving my truck back to the field from the elevator empty, because I am no longer transporting a product. There is a Farm Log tag which allows much more latitude, and can be used for most any purpose except to haul non agricultural or logging items commercially for hire. Most Farmers here use Farm Log tags for that reason.

The times they are a changin! Most of the states are now insolvent (bankrupt). Therefore, anything that moves (your rig) is a target for revenue. The regs for Va are probably not the same as other states around it. Certainly, up here in NY, the Vampire state, they are not the same as in PA, etc. Running a rig in all forty eight, I can tell you, that things change from state to state; BUT, all of them are looking for money; MY money and YOUR money. (The points on the license are just extra rewards.)

I spoke to our tractor club last winter about the DOT (Department of Tyrany) and how they probably would enforce the commercial regulations with us. Some members were so disgruntled they got a local NYS Police Commercial Vehicle Inspector to visit the club and share his knowledge. It was just about a complete replay of my discussion. Basically, up here in NY, if you are 101 miles from home, you are gonna get the big boy treatment.

PLEASE!! I am not saying that this is fair or even just. Virtually all of the states are desperate for money; and they will take ALL of yours and mine, from which they can separate us. The fact that you may have a beautiful antique tractor or piece of machinery just like one that a DOT officer's Dad or Grandpa had just makes you a more likely candidate to be stopped and inspected; Sorry folks. Get your ducks in a row; DOT numbers, log books, and DOT cards, LEGAL chains and binders, flares, etc. It is easier, cheaper, and won't spoil, an otherwise good tractor show or pull. Be safe. best, Phil

Our Southern States has them for your private non-commercial machines, maybe yours can help too.The loophole here is not calling it a vehicle, which is a commercial type machine, subject to registration laws.Things change so you may need to check your state laws.A state trooper informed me all was required was that "farm use" was clearly seen and legible, and made me wipe the mud off the farm use tag.He did however want to see my drivers license btw.

You could put anything you wanted on it, but it would not have any legal standing. You would need a state issued plate and have to pay the fee. A Texas farm tag is only valid for a 150 mile radius and for exclusive farm use.

Local Court house or DMV would be your best bet.

I cannot think of a BETTER way to attract attention than to be running around with a non-official farm use tag on a vehicle or trailer.

Heres what the farmer I worked for did farm truck Plate on his grain hauling rig every thing else got a little yellow sticker on the door problem with this is no night running but if all your lights work not a problem for the trailer put a SMV sign on and be done with it altough I recommend this for short hauls only (less than 20 miles) this is how it was done in central PA

SMV sign...
One point here - don't go faster than the SMV law says you can in your state. If you do, you'll get a speeding ticket...

Funny story. Hauling round bales on home-made trailer with mobile home axles very popular around here. no lights at all on trl thought i could make one more trip before dark(usta do this alot really make the boss mad bringing home wagons in the dark with no lights)well this was his idea so i had a non-turbo F-350 diesel and he had a dodge cummings obviusly he could make better time then me.Well rounded a the last turn to get home in the dark passed a cop forgot to mention only lights working on the truck at that time were headlights. 65 with a farm truck (boss said dont get caught) trailer tracked true i think that cop coulda pulled me over anytime i think it was in a 40 mph area not proud of it but i didnt get caught
