hydraulic cylinder on a WD

After sitting for six or seven months, I finally got my WD running. The left side cylinder that works the rear two point hitch is leaking when I put the lever all the way up. I can back the lever off a bit and it will stop, but the hydraulics bleed off quickly. The cylinder appears to be leaking around the threads where the body of the cylinder screws into the front cover. I tried to get on it with a big pipe wrench, but it did not budge. Can I fix this, should I rebuild this, or should I replace this cylinder? Any help is appreciated. You guys have been a great help already.

I think you've got two problems going on here. AZ Jack is right about the packing. I use teflon faucet stem packing from the local hardware store--pretty cheap and works well. Need to be sure to clean out all the old stuff first though.

Second, when you say that it bleeds off, are you saying that oil leaks out from the cylinder or do the lift arms go down when the lever is not all the way up? If that's the case, the problem is with your hold position valve. Search the AC forum for a fix for that. I've come up with a better fix (I think) and my loader bucket will stay up for weeks at a time.
Email me at jacktally1@yahoo.com if you want to know more about it.

Your hydraulic cylinder is packed with a rope type packing (expensive). If the packing nut won"t turn anymore with a pipe wrench then the adjustment is probably used up and will take new packing. I have backed out the nut and used a string or twine behind the old packing and gotten by for a while. Your lift lever should be all the way up to pick up implement-then drop to center position to carry implement or all the way down to lower implement to work. Do not carry implement when traveling with lift lever all the way up-the pump is constantly loaded this way. Jack

When you back off the lever, you are stopping the pump from pressurizing the cylinder, thus you stop the leak. You should be able to put a seal kit in the cylinder, check with any AC or AGCO dealer for parts. www.agcocorp.com for a dealer locator.
