Grow a small field of oats each summer, to start alfalfa, and provide some extra feed for wife's small herd of Shetland sheep, llamas and rabbits. this year we cut the oats with a sickle bar mower, raked and baled them in square bales. Took them to the Blanchard Steam and Old Engine show over the weekend. Guys were glad to run them thru their thrashing machine, an old McCormick-Deering, powered by a rusty but working old Russell steam engine. Was a lot like work, but worth it: Got about 70 bushels of the nicest cleanest oats we've had in a long time. That old thrasher sure cleaned them up nice. I've always held that the old thrashers when properly run can do the job, in comparison with the new stuff! Special thanks to Dave for the steamer, and Wayne for the thrasher. Blanchard, MI show is a great little show.

Attended a local show last weekend, and watched an old Case Model K combine working with oats. That ol' gal turned out some mighty fine looking product. I think much of the credit goes towards the spike tooth cylinder that those old Case's carried over from the threshing machine age. Sometimes the old ways are the best.
