Was here in Charleston when Hugo came thru in 1989.(actually I hi-tailed it up to the old family farm 220 miles inland to ride it out) Be prepared for damage on a scale you can't imagine when you get back. Also, there were few casualities during the storm. Only one or two if I remember correctly, but when folks came back; that is when the deaths and very serious accidents began. Chainsaws killed a number of people. One guy had a huge oak blown up in his yard. He bought a chainsaw and was cutting it up but wasn't paying attention to his little boy who was playing in the great big stump hole. When he made the first cut thru near the base of the trunk, the stump flopped back into place killing the little boy. One out of town construction workers(you'll will get thousands of those)fell off of one of the old three story houses downtown and skewered himself on a spike on top of a wrought iron fence. Heck, a guy fell off of the roof of my church and got killed. Just be careful when you get back and watch out for friends and neighbors who may try to bite off more than they can chew during the clean-up and repair process.

Well, good luck John. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. I talked to my mother this evening. She is just south of Baton Rouge and she is a nervous wreck. This is one thing I do not miss about living down there...

May God be with you and everyone in Katrina's path. We in NC have had to deal with several of these storms over the last few years, but none this strong. Wishing you all the best.

I can barely remember Hazel in '54 and Audrey as below. My Dad was a hydro lineman and they had their winch truck out with a line across the river and two guys in bosun chairs trying to catch people being washed down the Humber River on the west side of Toronto. That was the Humber and it was(is) a little river. We will all being hoping and praying that everyone will be safe and a special wish for those emergency workers who have to stay behind. Godspeed to you all.

It's now a category 5 storm, wind speeds up to 175 mph, constant 165,this is a killer hurricane. Just hope everyone in the path has already left. To the ones that are just leaving don't forget your neighbors and pets. We'll be there for you when it's over.

John and all in the path -
Wishing you safe passage and hoping not much damage. Cat 5 is a big "un and these things destroy all in their path. ShepFL

Looks like you are getting some water from it as it is. Know you are glad that you don't have to run this time.

Wish you well. Just noticed it was upgraded to a Cat 5. Not good. You are smart to leave low lying areas and south Louisiana is all low lying if you ask me. When Audrey hit Cameron in '56 (I think) there was debris from Cameron strewn 30 miles inland in the marshes that make up the coast. I was there; not pretty.
