I have a 1947 2-n ford tractor and it has hi and low range for driving on road and was wondering what other years of the n-series came out with them and was wondering if in the 7 months they made that series if all of them came out with the hi and low range or just a few. I've been told there rare. Thank you

Where do you get being made for 7 months? 2N was made fron 1942 thru 1947 when 8N came out as 48 model. I have a 44 2N Dad bought new and as soon as Sherman was avaible he had it installed, ad a 41 9N that I bought a few year ago with the Sherman and if it did not have the Sherman I would not have Owned it, A lot of my work is done in 2nd over with 3rd over being used quite often. A Sherman over-under would be a lot better with 2nd under, 2nd, 2nd over, 3rd under,3rd, & 3rd over providing a great range of speeds

Actually - the first 1948 8N tractor rolled off the assembly line in July 1947. They did continue to make 2Ns past July 1947, but only as long as parts held out. I would imagine that would only be a few months at best. That would put the 1947 2N model only being made for "about" 9 months in 1947.

Mark,

John Smith's site has a lot of good info on your Sherman. As stated below, they were a dealer installed aftermarket option. Although there IS some speculation/debate as to whether 'N's could be special ordered directly from the factory with them in the later years. Your 'step-up' (overdrive only) is actually relatively common as far as Shermans go. Consider how often they appear on eBay (AND the low sale prices) and the frequency that they are listed as a selling point in tractors. The Combination ('3 speed') is next in availability with the 'step-down'(underdrive only) being rather rare. There was also a reverser and an extreme underdrive creeper(9:1). Both of THESE are what are considered TRULY rare(AND valuable). There's lots more of us out here that deal in these that will have more info. Keep asking around.

The 2 speed is not too rare.I have seen several at shows and have yet to see anyone offer more just because they had a 2 speed installed.I have two 2N's with the 2 speed.

You don't offer more with a Sherman, If it doesn't have it then you just walk away and let someone that doesn't have use for a tractor buy it

The auxillary transmissions were a dealer-intalled aftermarket add-on, made by one of several different companys, so to answer your question, the factory made NONE, and there's no way to ever know how many were dealer (or owner) unstalled.
