Guys(and girls),
I have some advice for those of us out there who have been around heavy equipment for so long that it sometimes seems that we take tractor and equipment safety for granted. Last Friday (August 19,2005) my Dad was runover and killed by a ten and a half foot bushhog behind our 3010 while clipping behind one of our pastures. He was most likely standing up to stretch his legs while driving when the clipper hit the side of a tree. He was thrown off balance and fell backwards over the tractor and the clipper ran over him and cut him all up. His body was drug under the clipper for about 50 yards into the woods until the tractor hit heavy undergrowth, powered out and killed. I had the most unfortunate experience of finding him there under the headlights of my fourwheeler at 9pm that night. Needless to say, there wasn't much left of him. The 3010 and the clipper are alright though they will always remind me of this incident. My Dad was always safety conscious and never reckless and I will never know what caused this accident exactly. I'm hoping that this information of my Dads death will help us all to be a little more aware of our tractors, equipment and our surroundings and in turn save some lives as well as the hard pain that comes from the loss of a loved one. The new John Deere safety decal sums this up nicely:

(SAFETY. DEAL WITH IT.)

Big 3010, I am so sorry about your Dad, I know that must have been quite a shock to fine him that way. Just remember he was proabley happy in what he was doing, and I am sure my Dad would have rather have gone that way than the cancer way he did 19 years ago tomorrow. Our Prayers are with you.

Big3010, Our Prayers are with you and your family. Sorry to hear of the loss of your father and they way he went. We pray that you will find peace and escape the memory of the way you discovered him. Thanks for sharing how quickly these machines can become an instrument of death for those who might for an instant let their guard down.

I normally don't comment on things like this, but this one can't be ignored. God only knows how often any of us have been out in the field all day, stand up to stretch or whatever. We've all done it, extremely unfortunate what has happened to you and your family and friends. My deepest sympathy.

I'm very sad to hear that, truely. And you are right, it only takes a second of letting the guard down. My condolences to you and yours. And now that your father has passed, and there is nothing that can be done to change that, may God bless his soul, and may he watch over you and yours. If your ears start ringing for no known reason out of the blue, no harm done if you smile and say "Hey Dad, you've got my attention...".

I don't know what to tell you about the tractor or the hog, you're gonna have to figure that one out on your own. Good luck.

Mark

Sorry for the loss of your father before his time. And having to find him the way you did. At least he past away doing what he enjoyed.Better than being tied to a machine in a hospital for weeks or months.

Big 3010,
I was moved to tears by your story. I am 41 years old and grew up on a farm. I cannot tell you how many times I had brushes with death while doing routine farm and ranching chores. We never know why it is that one of us escapes without a scratch, and others pay the ultimate price in the loss of their life here on this earth. Please know that your father lives on in spirit and is in a place so devine, and peaceful, and looking down upon you and your family. In your toughest and most trying times, he will be there with his hand on your shoulder urging you ever forward and helping you to take the next step forward as you struggle through this life here on earth. Yes, his work on this earth was finished, but God still has things for you and the other survivors of your family to accomplish on this earth, and when God calls you into his kingdom, you will once again be reunited with your dad in the most awesome place of all. God Bless You and your Family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you in this tragic loss and I am sure Dad is proud of you for sharing his story with us. I commend your strength and wish you many happy memories. I am sharing your story with my husband, our kids and the 90-year-old grandfather who still thinks he can do everything he used to do, and, as we live on a farm, that usually includes tractor activities. I worry daily about something like this happening to our Papaw. Again, my prayers to you and your family. Sarah

I wonder how many accidents like that happened with old Minneapolis U's and Z's with seats that hung out over the drawbar. Looked like you were halfway off before anything went wrong.

Big 3010.
This is truly a tragic thing. The prayers of me and my family will be for you and yours at this time.
You are right - accidents happen when the tasks we perform become just "routine". We let our guard down for just a moment - and then it happens. My best description is that it's just like an ambush - by the time you realize what has happened - it's all over.
Again - please tell your family that I will lift you all up to the Lord.

God Bless

Sorry to hear the bad news! I send condolences to you and your family! It is terrible how those accidents happen! I did auto body work, and one day found out how quickly one can get into terrible trouble! I had been warned about using the electric body grinder too close to the cracks between the door and fender, but one day, it caught, and i got smacked in the left cheek by a grinding disc just starting to turn, after being stopped in that crack between the doors! Fortunately, i healed up with no scars, but i honored that body grinder from then on! Rustyj

So sorry for your loss. I am impressed with your strength! I used to read posts of accidents/casualties and would offer prayer to those that were in need...would hurt for a few minutes and then go on. However, 4 weeks ago tomorrow, my oldest son (23) had an accident on his new motorcycle,(Suzuki Hayabusa - 200 mph bike). For a few days it was touch and go, we didn't know if he was going to make it. While he was critical, I would come home, read this forum and try to relax before getting cleaned up to go back to the hospital. Since the accident, I can't keep from weeping when I read something like your Dad passing. My son was only going 20 to 25 mph... I know because I have ridden bikes all my life, I went to the crash site twice to inspect, he hit a curb and followed that curb around a curve for 50 feet, put his foot down, broke his leg, flipped, and he hit a fire hydrant with his body...internal injuries, removed spleen, broken leg, broken ribs, collapsed lungs, almost lost a kidney, etc. The bike was only scratched. My good news is, tonight he was asking me if I would drive him to work! So everyone's prayers from our surrounding community, our churches, our co-workers, our family, etc., have been answered! I only hope that all the good words, thoughts, and prayers will help you and yours the way they have helped me and mine! The good Lord takes care of us...sometimes in ways that we do not know. I have found so many good people in the world the last few weeks, including those who run, and those who read and write on this forum! Thank you all from the bottom of my heart! Sorry for the long post...it was just on my heart. Mike
