I have had my Craftsman 6.5 hp high wheeled trimmer for 4 years. I am always amazed that it starts everytime on the first pull. Be it first pull of the year or week. Fine machine, easy to replace the string. But you have to wear ear and eye protection.

string trimmers and chain saws run fast hot and hard no cool downs and warm ups. if you take that silly screen out of the muffler mix er heavy on the oil. i rather clean a spark plug every now and then vs overhauling moto9rs. i have seen COUNTLESS motors stuck rings scored pistions etc etc because of straight gas or lean mix "so it doesnt smoke". the key to any model no matter waht brand is mix the gas correctly and a bit heavy

I've had very good service out of my Stihl FS85, which is no longer available. Most of the commercial landscapers around here use RedMax.

I don't understand the two posts below complaining about string heads. Maybe they don't work on the cheaper models, but my Stihl autofeed head works just fine. And when I get into tough stuff like cattails and brush, I switch to a three-pointed brushcutter blade. The brush blade is good up to about half-inch saplings; anything bigger than that and I use a chain saw.

Whichever one your wife can start, and will use! I got mine a Ryobi electric with a rechargeable battery three years ago, and haven't used one since.

My dad got a TroyBilt earlier this year at LOWES. Got one with the click Link system. and the Pole saw attachment to go with it. The way I understand it Troy Bilt is now a subsidary of MTD as are a number of other names so I am sure this set up is available under different marks.

The realy neat thing about the trimmer he got is the spring assist starting. The first half of the pull on the rope winds up a spring and the second half spins the engine fast enough to start it. real neat and easier for him to start.

Have used every brand (I think ) commercially and had settled with Tanaka over the last six years but local dealer felt the support and updated research over the last few years gave Stihl the advantage so we bought 2 new FS100RX trimmers and they are the real deal. Little geting used to the throttle control but lots of power and we use them 5-6 hours a day 5 days a week commercially. 329 dollars plus tax should last the home owner or property owner a lifetime if you use good oil in them. $80 Ryobi from TSC. Have run the snot out of it for 6 years with nothing more than regreased the drive shaft and put in a new plug this year.Usually run about 20-30 tanks of fuel through it per season. use the orange .95 line for fast cut and long life.
Also use the E3 brand sparkplug from TSC,$7 and worth every cent in any engine. What they advertise about those plugs is fact, not advertising BS.

a buddy of mine works at a shop that services sthil (he doesnt work on the small stuff but an old timer in the shop does) and he said there having trouble with there new "2 mix or wahtever there called" there having terrible problems with them. i would shy away from sthil at least that new design until they get bugs worked out. shindawa is junk from experience and parts are hard to come by after 5 years. redmax would get my vote. old john deeres are good (ie read taht as 80's john deeres. new ones junk made by homelite. but its like everything merging. wacker merged with husky which merged with blue bird. speaking of husky stray away from them as well

RedMax hands down any day of the week.We have some real college grads using them that could tear up an anvil with a rubber hammer and these really hold up.No set screws to adjust and run perfect everytime. The only thing these weedeaters don't like is to be ran over with a truck, that'll getem. We,ve used just about every brand out there and we have some of these going on 6 years old and still running.

I will have to admit Red Max is a great machine. I am on my 5 th. A little pricy @ around 350.00, but you get what you pay for. You are right they wouldn't hold up under a truck tire. I also tryed that. Stan in calif.

Shindaiwa also puts out a good machine--here in NY, they"re the choice of many of the pros. Folks have one that gets beat to death trimming electric fence lines and is still going strong. They"re not cheap, but quality rarely is.

I have had Weed Eaters thet are good. I have had a Homelite, Snapper ( which turns out not to be a Snapper when you go to but parts, and the Snapper Dealer laughs out loud and says sorry Charley. I am on my second Stiel, the first grew legs and walked away. First one cost $230, second $280 well worth the difference. I would buy a Stiel again

Not sure about the brand but don"t buy one where you have to put the string on a spool. I have yet to see one of them that works properly.
