Good Morning All,

I am looking for recommendations for a generator. I often have projects away from the buildings and I would like to have power for tools instead of lugging materials back and forth or depending on batteries. Looking for a reasonable cost gas generator that will work when I want it to. Price of a rental is $52/day so I can pay for one of the smaller/less costly versions in about 8-10 days. Just looking for feedback and other thoughts from those who have been down this path before. Right now I don"t anticipate needing much more than the ability to run hand tools (mostly a skil saw) and charge batteries for the cordless drills.

Thanks,

Kirk

I'd buy a power inverter, the cost is way down from what they used to be.

Deepending on your needs. A couple of Deep Cycle Optima batteries and a 2000W invertor is an option. Nice and quiet too. The gasoline variable speed invertor types would be another choice. Small diesels such as the Yanmar are outstanding but are noisy. The aircooled diesels have to be run well loaded. Or they run too cool and stick the rings and plug the ports with unburned fuel.

I used battery powered tools all the time, 18volt and 12 volt dewalt, I have chargers in my truck that work off the cigarette lighter they charge right up, my second choice would also be an inverter

Hi Kirk,

There's only one way to buy a generator, the smallest one that get the job done with using the least amount of fuel. Dig until you get the fuel consumtion costs to compare. No spec's, then refuse to buy as it will cost you more to run it vs another model.

There is a China diesel engine, 13hp, that uses 1/2gal hr at full hp rating, for $689 plus deliverly about $200. Drawback is it's heavy so would have to be wheel mounted for being portable. Depending on your useage, fuel cost could save you a ton of money.

Hi Russ,

Take alook at this guys website as he's been giving good info for the past 3yrs that I know of.
He sells several different diesel engines so be sure to look all of them over before deciding.

Depending on your power requirements, a older 4cyl VW diesel engine has alot to offer. You can also buy these new for about $1200 long block in California. Look at the VW mags for ads.

Aloha, My nephew has a Honda EU2000I and he is using it everyday for his lunch wagon. It is very quiet, light and easy on the gas. It is an inverter type of generator and it also has 12v charging terminals on it for battery charging. It should easily run your small power tools and a lot of other things. People use this generator for RV use and they love it. Do a search on a Honda EU2000I and read the specs on it. Hope this helps.

Mahalo,

Kirk,

To charge the batteries you'd be better off with an inverter in the truck. No sense in humping a generator around when you've got plenty of power with you already.
You'd need a BIG inverter to run a skillsaw so thats a different story but for $50 (that'd be a real good inverter) you could save some hassle.

I do use that trick already for battery charging. I included it as a use to indicate that I would not require a monster generator (at least not yet). As you say, it is problematic to try to run the skilsaw or other corded tools. I have also considered some of the "hacks" to the alternator to get AC power for tools.
