i recently bought a ford 3610. and after closer inspection i realise its had something wrong with it in the past, given away by the new lift arms on the back end. i need some help with the pto as after replacing a bent selector and fork i cant get the thing into gear when there is anything attached to it. its fine running on its own but when i try and start the mower it just grates horribly and i darent pull it any harder.

regards

New lift arms and pto repairs indicate that the tractor must have been used for mowing as compared to plowing and apparently had seen a lot of that.

Your problem with attached implements may be caused by misalighment caused by a bad bearing....just guessing. Not really clear to me what problem you are describing.

On starting any mower, there is usually a big clanging noise caused by the blades swinging abruptly straight out from the center of the hub from whatever position they were in before you engaged the pto. Once the initial bang ceases, it should run smoothly.

Do you have Live PTO operated by a 2 stage clutch and an engagement lever whereas releasing the clutch starts the pto rotation, or Independent which has no relationship to the clutch and starts turning a couple of seconds after you engage the lever? Answering this will help with the rest of your question.

Mark

according to my manual i have a "transmission" or live pto. i believe it is a live pto as there is only one travel oin the pedal, i.e you do not press through one section into another type of pressure. when i try to engage a mower i press the clutch as indicated in the manual and pull the lever, the noise it creates is similar to grating gears in a car. i then let go of the lever for fear of bending the selector fork.

thanks for your help so far

Matt
