I drive a freightliner school bus it is a 2004 model. Last year the school recieved the bus in early june and the bus sat until about the first part of august. When i went to start it the batteries were dead and they would not accept a charge. So they put new batteries in the bus. And this year was the same thing. We have 3 others that are doing the same thing. What my question is why do they run down so quick? And another thing is that these batteries would get so hot that friday morning they boiled all of the water out of one battery. What my other question is why did they get so hot? I have an old battery at home that i tried to charge up and it also got hot like these batteries all that i used on that battery was a 10 amp charger. Is it a short in the battery or just the way they build them or what? Thanks for your help. Delbert

If you have a couple bikes in storage with little batteries they always go bad.Now people use a Battery Tender type charger that give a little charge only when needed.First you must see if there is some type of load from the bus or the Battery Tender will try to supply that also.I dont even own this thing my freinds do.I just buy new batteries every year.

What kind of batteries? I wouldn't leave batteries connected in equipment sitting for more than a few weeks.

Batteries boil over because of overcharge or the battery is bad. They may be bad from sitting dead. I would all most guess that all these buses have something drawing current that is running the batteries down. Do the buses have clocks?? When parking them for a long time, disonnect the batteries. If you want to be perfect, remove the batteries, or not, and leave them hooked to a trickal charger when stored.

Sounds like the batteries are severly sulpated and/or have a shorted cell brought on by the sulphation. As others have stated, somthing in that bus draws a steady current that discharges the batteries, which if left uncharged are quickly ruined by sulphation. I am suprised that this bus does not have a locking battery disconnect switch to prevent battery discharge/electrical fires/theft.
