What's Happening in my Engine ???

What can cause a flathead engine to have oily coolant, and watery oil? Obviously, the engine oil is making it's way into the cooling system and the coolant is somehow getting into the lubricating oil. Isn't it usually one way or the other but not both? Used a new head gasket, it leaked a bit externally after installation but no evidence since. Engine runs good, starts up well and runs smooth. Any suggestions?

It's a 4-cylinder Continental 140 (F400 series) engine. Replaced the head gasket because it had one sticking valve so I ground the valves and lapped them in after getting the one unstuck. Torqued to factory specs but not after running it so that should be tried I guess. I don't think the engine had much use in it's day, came from a mid 60's MF34 swather and I transplanted it into my Case V which uses that same engine (but in 124 size). The original 124 in the V's had wet sleeves but this one is a sleeveless model, bores in the block. I didn't mill the head or even check it, that might have been a mistake too I guess. Actually, I used the head off the original 124 engine because it had the water temp fitting hole in the right place (the newer head opening would have made things tough for that).

Is this a wet sleeve engine?

You can often experience a leak both ways' i.e., from radiator into the oil, and the oil into the radiator. When running the oil pressure is higher than the coolant pressure, thus leak of oil into the coolant. When you stop the engine, the oil pressure return to zero pretty fast, but the coolant remains at full pressure and actually rises a bit, thus coolant into the oil. This "two-way" leaking is not uncommon. Give us some more details about your putting on a new gasket: why did you do it? previous leaks? mill head? have manuals? follow them for torquing? etc.

The worst case senario is a crack between the water jacket and the oil gallery to the crank/cam/valve tappets. I witnessed this once on a 235 chevy. It would get water in the oil while it sat and when running, it would pump oil into the water.

Could be that the gasket didn't work. Why well some times new ones are bad, or you have a warped head, or a cracked head. When you installed the gasket did you use something like copper coat on the gasket? That helps some times and as Mike said haed you retoqure the head after runnig it to warm it up.

Try retorqueing the head bolts and dump some bar's leak in for good measure.

Was it the correct one? Sometimes part numbers don"t tell the whole story - don"t ask how I know that!!!
If there was no problem before the new head gasket, then... (Thinking out loud here)
