Just out of curiosity, how much does it usually cost to have a 5 wire barbed wire fence put in? All the corners are set, as are stretch posts and supplies are provided - post set on 12' spacing, no wire twists between posts and the ground is level and has no trees to deal with. There is about 2 1/2 to 3 miles total to be built. Any information/input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Case Lady:

I build fence as a second job. Around here in SW IA, fencing goes for around $7-$8/rd. 1 rd= 16.5 ft. 80 rd = 1/4 mile. Then plus $20/corner. Figure $680/ 1/4 mile (labor only) with only 2 corners/ 1/4 mile. More if more corners and major bends in the fence. A good crew (3 men) should be able to put in between 1/4 and 1/2 mile of fence per day if they work at it.

Rob, using your figures, that comes out to about $225 per man per day - - IF they only get up 1/4 mile. That is about $28 per hour labor. That is a little high, at least for around here in No.Ctr. Texas.

Tom:

Don't forget that the guy running the crew, (Me) has a tractor, driver, and a digger. supplies all the tools and the fuel, gloves, etc.. Insurance. I am also the guy that gets the call next year if I or one of my crew does not do something right, and has to go back and fix it (at no cost).

CaseLady, here where I am in Missouri I pay $75 a day for fence builders. These are people I've had before and they know what I expect. The ones I have used are diligent and worth the money. I also know that will not be true with all folks. Since you have completed the more difficult part in my opinion I'd see if you could establish a per foot agreement which will give them some incentive to complete. You must however agree on how and what is to be done and EVERYONE must understand. Good luck....

If the corners and stretch posts are already in that is probably at least 1/2 the work already. At 12' spacing you are looking at around 100 T posts per 1/4 mile. With 3 miles to build that ends up with around 1,200 T posts total!

Just kind of running it through my head, I would have to guess it is going to cost you around $4,000 of labor to install the rest of the fence. This is just with me doing the math based on what I think it would take to do the job at $15/hr. I was figuring around 8 to 10 minutes per post and 30 to 45 minutes to strech each 300' strand of wire. That seems pretty reasonable to me.

But of course I'm an accountant and have never built a fence in my life so there is some guesswork being done! Maybe someone will correct me now that I've taken a stab at it! ;-)

Of couse the other option is to just call a fencing company and ask them how much they would charge you.

HTH, Nathan

That includes all the time between posts, etc. I figured it was a little conservative, but I figured by the time you get to that last 1/4 mile of posts you would be pretty tired.

Slow and steady wins the race! ;-)

I guess my $15/hr is a little high for fence building as well!

Down here in the Great Southwest Missouri Desert, I pay $900.00 a quarter for labor plus materials, but 9/10 of it is straight up and straight down, and almost all in chunk rock, through timber. Believe me, it's young man's job doing that down here, and they earn every bit of it. Harley
