old post hole auger won't dig in

I have an old danuser digger with a pretty beat up 12" auger. I'm building a pole barn and have been trying to dig my post holes with it.

Man, what a hassle. The problem is that it doesn't want to dig in. It will just sit there and spin all day. I have to keep lifting and dropping, lifting and dropping. Then loosen up with a digger bar. Repeat for 10 minutes at least.

What can I do to get it to grab? It looks like the teeth at the end of the flights are replaceable, but I'm thinking more along the lines of welding something on. Maybe I can weld a bead along the rounded teeth and gring to an edge.

This model actually has the down presure hydraulic cyl, but my old Ford 650 doesn't have external hydraulics.

I've been digging holes for the last couple weeks with about every version of a 9 inch auger out there in rocks, loose dirt, and hard packed clay. (We are redesigning our post hole diggers here at work and are testing the competition.) If you are in clay, sharp teeth will make a difference like you wouldn't believe. Call Danuser and order a set of teeth for $35 (I think that was the price on the newer augers) and that will help tremendously. If that doesn't do it, weld a bracket on the boom and hang weights. In packed clay, augers that won't dig at all with no weight will dig with 90 pounds on the boom in our testing.

Spiral tips seem to work better in clay than fish tail types. Which do you have?

If your teeth are worn badly, just replace them, not worth the trouble to weld and resharpen.

Get the replacement blades and a new point if necessary. Danuser makes what's called a hole-digger head that would weld ont the bottom of the auger. It is very aggressive, with replacable teeth. I've had excellent results with my customers who have hard ground. It is expensive, but your time is worth something too. HTH

I also have an old Danuser. Dad years ago cut a couple of railroad spikes and welded one on each blade, one to the inside, one to the outside. Here in the foothills of NC we have a lot of red clay. Even with new blades the clay in the hole would slick out and all you would do is spin the bit. After the addition of the teeth it would dig like crazy.

Like Tom says. Buy new blades. Blades may not look bad but believe me, from long experience, a little wear will cause them to not dig. They are way more complicated than they look like for sharpening or trying to weld.

Start all the holes and pour water in them.....or sharpen the teeth on the auger.

Take the blades off. Inspect, reshape, sharpen. If worn badly, get some new ones. Also, checm the center "stinger" if it has one. I keep at least one or two sets of new blades at all times; then I can change blades and keep digging, sharpen later. If you expect it to work a post hole digger must be maintained like any piece of equipment. If you weld on it you will ruin it needlessly.
