I have a '37 Case CC with old but decent tires on the rear. A previous owner spray painted the rims grey and got paint on the tires also, about 3 inches all the way around. This is old paint on old tires. Is there something that will remove this paint, or is there something black that I can spray over it that's better than paint? If I can get these tires black again, I won't have to replace them since they still have good tread.

Brake fluid on a rag, it's good for the rubber and hates paint. it needs to set a day or two with the brake fluid. if you want it off now, then lacquer thinner will remove it now.

A vibrator sander works great.

If you want something that will help preserve the old rubber as well as making them a nice black all over, seal small cracks, go to Miller Tire and buy some of their tire paint, rubber based and just paint it on, will make the old rubber look like new

more on cosmetic paint for Tires in reply to Leroy, 08-15-2005 05:44:50
Cosmetic Tire "touch up" or "finishing" paints are used by tire manufacturers to repair marred, scuffed and abraded tires, they then sell them as if they were 1st class and not 2nd class tires. Also used in the retread industry, they are black, water based, latex based paints that flex with the tire and don't crack. Try "PR-41", made by Darmex (www.darmex-int.com) and sold in the US by Darchem TIP, Miramar FL, 954-4426-682.

I dont know about paint that has been on there for awhile but reasonably fresh paint comes of well with some black paint mixed in with paint thinner...Jim

Hi Dave,

Blech White or any good tire cleaner used with a lot of elbow grease will pull that paint right off of there.
